sorry all
I have just been playing DOOM3 and I have to say that I doubt I wouldn’t have given it 8.5, more like 7 or 7.5 maybe a 6 after I have played some more.
Why ?
Well the graphics are very good, when you can see them… Most of the time it is pitch black and you can’t see anything (unless you use your torch) but then your not holding a weapon. (First thing I did was look for gamma in options, but Nope!)
From what I have played, the zombies pop out of the dark, stand in the dark, so you are basicly shooting at black hoping that you hit them, but then their on top of you and your dead.
You walk down a coridor through a door into a new room, 1 will jump out infront of you, then while your shooting at that, 1 will come from out of the door you just came through (from the empty coridor) and get you in the back.
Very boring…
I play everything on its hardest setting, and so far I am walking into a room, being killed by something poping out or in the dark where you can’t see it to shoot at, and dying. Then I know where they are (always the same) and I try again… Boring…
Being on the hardest setting it takes a few shots to kill them, however you get one shot off on the shot gun, and in the time it takes you to **** it for your next shot, your dead… Boring…
Min specs is 1.5? 386ram? 64mb GFX
I am running 1.8 512 128 and I have everything set to min or off, except for x2 anti alise and it is still a little slow at times, so I wouldn’t bother on a min spec sytem.
This is not a bad thing, as even with everything at min, from what you can see it looks good.
I think I might update to a p4 2.8 this week or next depending on if I can be bothered spending the money. Because that means I have to update the motherboard as well to support the 800mhz bus on the 2.8. I will also then have to check that my ram is suitible as I think I am running DRAM and might have to change that as well to DDR DRAM ? Needless to say I hadn’t plained on upgrading my computer, although Sims2 comes out in less than 20 days and I can’t have that chopy for my g/f.
As for the sound of DOOM, they are second to none, the place does feel alive, and you will be turning around to see what made that noise behind you.
So excellent graphics that you can’t often see… excellent sound…
But so far I say piss poor gameplay, and so if its not playable it doesn’t matter how good it looks or sounds, it’s just no fun.
NOTE: I have spent the last 4 days trying to finish Farcry on the hardest setting and I am still going. Some parts of that I have had to try 25-50 times to get through… But because it is fun and challanging I keep trying.
I haven’t gotten very far into DOOM yet, but because of the crappy game play and not being able to see the monsters I want to turn down the difficulty settings. But I dont want to have to redo the little I have done because of how crapy and boring it is and knowing exactly where the monsters are.
I might add a couple of screen shots after to show you how dark and stupid it is if people want to see it…
For now, after 3 hours of playing, 1 of those testing the settings and restarting over and over. I have had enough, so back to Farcry for me.
i have to agree with vulcan…its an ok game nothing really special, with a radeon x800 it looks nice but the gameplays nothing new…i dont know why in the trade show demos they kept saying how amazing the ai reactions are, they’re just your average scripted reactions. the rest of the gameplay is just the same as it has always been, it takes a little more to push things nowadays, you cant rely on graphics. People arent wowed by that anymore and they dont think that graphics make a good game unless they’re casual gamers, who tend to be on consoles anyway.
the thing with ID is that they make great engines and they needed to get this out before HL2 so that other companies would buy their engine and not valves.
its enjoyable for a little while but i couldnt play it for hours on end like i can for some games. ill just play this until i buy the cd key for half life 2
im playing the game at the moment, and enjoying it. i do agree its sometimes too dark but i dont mind, kinda sets the mood, i really like the way you can interact with computers and touch screens within the game and also really like the fear factor, it has honestly made me jump a few times.
cool stuff, will play it untill i get bored or finish it.
I’m gonna take a peek at it as soon as I get my x800xt card… should be a week now… 2 tops…
I hope it’s just a little scary =)
well, I like it, very much, the innovation of this game is that it doesnt have any innovation! thats why I personally enjoy it, it´s easy to play and its fun it´s the nature of the game, it´s Doom
I got the impression from my friends it was nothing but point shoot and a random scream here and there… :beam:
ya but the last game that made me jump while playing was resident evil 1 dog hall OMFG i even dropped the controller, i had the lights out and tv on with the sound at a decent volume then all of a sudden blam dogs come flying outta da winda im like HOLYFÛCK!NGSH!T dropped the controller and pooped me pants.
With Doom 3 its all dark then all of a sudden BAM someones in front of you, you jump you shoot ans start running like hell and if theres not someone behind you then your in luck.
In the end its a fun entertaining game the sort of which i miss playing nowadays.
I think developers are trying to makes games so lifelike that theyre making crappy games, if i play a game its not supposed to emulate what i do every day its suppsoed to be diffrent, isnt that the purpose of playing videogames???
Well, the game definately had a lot of boring points and a lot of “****it, not now” kind of annoying scares with monsters coming from pretty much everywhere. It’s somewhat fun to play, and did get better starting from hell on, most especially the fight with the guardian and the game getting a whole lot easier with the soul cube. The cyberdemon was pretty much a joke as with all of the bosses (as well as the stronger monsters like barons, revs, and the archvile) since the soul cube. Once I figured out how the AI attacks, the game left little suprises and monsters appearing from everywhere become less of a react or die situation and more of a “give me a sec, i’ll take care of it” thing. I’m not sure it’s the kind of game that’s fun enough to come back to, but single player once over is pretty good. As far as multiplayer goes, it was pretty fun for a couple of hours gunning down guys and hiding in the darkness, but it’s very repetative and not much more complex than quake 3 (run and gun, RL or shotgun takes all). Can’t say there’s much for strategy online or off – but I’m hoping that mods will take care of that and other things.
As for farcry…
I downloaded the farcry demo yesterday night once I got my bearings control-wise, the game has been fun as hell (even just that one level, I’ve been playing it over and over). The AI is pretty fun to fight, getting all panicky and laying down cover fire (and other various things). The huge sight distance both for you and your enemies is fun as well, and the AI’s sight makes for some fun distance learning experiences. I do wish however it had more openings for intense firefights but I did have quite a lot of fun being chased around in the patrol boats at really high speed. The water looks fantastic, although I do wish it had better splash effects (there’s a counter-strike source video that illustrates fantastic water effects). Soon as I get enough free time to get out I’m probably going to buy the game (I’ll likely be buying HL2 as well). I hear the multiplayer is just spawn-camping snipe fests, but at the very least I’m pretty well assured from the demo that the rest of the single player missions will be quite cool.
So far, I’m definately liking farcry better than doom3.
Well I wanted to know just how different Max and Min settings were and thought I would share it with you.
This is the opening shot of the game without moving.
** Note:** On max I can’t even navigate the menu to start a game, the mouse is so jumpy, I would say Max is runnung at .5 fps you turn and the next frame is liek 45degs from where you were…
I started it on Min took a shot, started it on Max and took a shot, I couldn’t really tell you the difference until I looked at them both.
From what I can see it is just texture detail, remembering that I had to blow up the min from 640480 to 1024768… EDIT… or should I say draw distance.
Also considering the the menu only has the globe rotating in the background there is no reson why the menu system should be so slow. Be warned if you set it to max on a crapy system you will spend forever trying to get the mouse on the buttons to tun it off.
