I’m curious, is that all scripting for the circles? Like when you get a new link, how are you putting it up? Do you go back into Flash and add it in or are you using a script that’ll do it automatically? Also I really like the setup and the variation of shapes.
One of the very best concepts I have seen thus far.
Nice way to go man.
Although there is one thing I’d like to point out here. When one clicks on “Link Me” link that you have at the bottom right, an email form opens up. SUPERB! But when one submits the message, it says: “…I’ll check out your site and get back to you ASAP”…
The lingo is perfect for a casual site, but if you’re doing it pro, I don’t think words like ASAP are legit.
Thanks for all the comments I’m glad it seems I’m going in the right direction:)
thelonephoenix, I’ll correct the English right away!
indecisive: yeah I started out coding the links into the Flash at first because I didn’t know what I was doing but 3 new links in and I realised what an enormous pain it was to do it that way especially when you have a regularly growing number of different skins! The links are now kept in a database and are retrieved with php which makes updating them simple as pie. I’ve got to hurry up and code the archive page as well now as the main design just filled up.
spad3s: no probs, look forward to seeing your new site!
I got a quick question: just got a request for a link to a spanish (i think) site. What do you guys reckon my policy should be on non-English content sites.
I hadn’t really thought about it, but as it’s an English language site and the common language for the majority of users is going to be English I don’t really want to put people off by sending them to sites they don’t understand…
…on the other hand it’s a nice portfolio site, I want to be inclusive and to be honest I didn’t have much trouble navigating it, working out what “contacto” meant didn’t really require a degree in linguistics…
I still reckon you should make the tooltip on the polka dots, not right bottom of the screen, pretty annoying to roll over a dot and read the url, then blindly trying to hit another dot. it would be nice just to focus on the dots. Especially on big screens.
I really like the dragable text but i dont think its very effective. Why not make a scrollbar? I had to drag a lot of text in the about section.
Math.round(value) of your easing script. Dont you just hate blurred pixelfonts?
To prevent spam, check if the input fields of the forms arent empty.
About the language issue; I think it would be best for now if you only accepted English sites. If the website is running pretty well and a lot of links would be sold, you should concider Mawoosh for other languages. Mawoosh.jp with japanese content and japanese links, Mawoosh.nl with dutch content and dutch links etc. Or just put all the languages in 1 site on Mawoosh.com. saves some money (;
Anyway i think this is a really nice concept. Keep it up!
Links are free for now, but once I’ve got some decent traffic they’re going to be auctioned off: as the higher bids come in they will go into the main design and push lower bids into the archive… and then I’ll be a multimillionaire. Honest.
Don’t worry I’ll plug all those that have helped me with their comments once I’m rich and famous!
@ greggeh: I see what you mean about having to look away to check what site you are visiting…
I thought I had the blurred pixels covered, I’ve religiously Math.rounded everything as far as I know, I’ll check it again. Out of interest do all the pixels blur? what sections are looking blurred to you? (none of them look blurred to me).
I’ll validate the email form as soon as i can too. I’ve received quite a few blank emails already, I guess a couple were from you then!
As for dragging and scrolling, I found that it was much easier to make a pdf style drag mainly because of the resizing. I thought it would be really complicated to make a resizing scrollbar. I kind of like dragging too because it gives the user some kind of tactile feedback as in it’s you who’s making the text move. I’ll look into a scrollbar though.
On another note does anyone know of any small sites or blogs that review submitted sites? Something along the line of slashdot or boing boing but less famous. I don’t think the site is ready for them yet.
