:tired: It’s 3 in the morning, so I’ve decided my site’s finished for now.
It’s veeeery simple because I’m a complete Flash beginner, but I’ve tried to keep it as tasteful as possible within my abilities. The design and color scheme is supposed to change every week or two, I’ve put two versions up for now so you can see what it might look like (the small links in the top left corner).
Content-wise, it’s just going to be a collection of links to other sites, so if anyone wants me to link to their site let me know…
I like it. I think it’s excellent. But I have to agree with Nich that the beeps are annoying. They’re making me feel like I am in a phone conversation and accidently pressing the buttons while I speak… But the simple layout and the use of flash is great.
now that’s the kind of post I was hoping for this morning, welcome on board!:thumb2:
@ everyone else: Thanks for the kind comments, the beeps eh… yeah my brother pulled me up on that one too. I’ll turn the volume down and pull them altogether if I still get complaints.
Talking of sound, what did you guys make of the rain in the second version? In fact, which version did you prefer?
For those of you with sites, there’s a link waiting for you with your name on it if you want it!
It’s just a collection of links to other people’s sites presented in a hopefully more appealing manner than usual.
With a bit of censorship of what I put up on the site (no free ipod sites etc) and some decent designs, it should be a more pleasant way to discover new sites for webusers and a more stylish way to publicize/get some traffic for site owners.
Links are free for now but in the future it would be great if I could make a dollar or two off it as well!!
For now, it’s been a great way to learn some Flash and it’s a good design challenge for me too to come up with different designs (skins I guess) based on the basic 16 polka dots + color idea.
There’s a faq on the site too based on all those questions that noone has actually asked me yet. I guess your’s should go to the top of the list!
You asked how I would keep people coming to the site, well one thing is by regularly changing the skins and keeping them fresh. There are two skins up right now, and I’m hoping to add a new one every week.
If you’ve got any other bright ideas though, I’m all ears! Let’s get our thinking caps on!
One problem I’m facing is how to update the site easily when I have a regular stream of new links. I’ve got to work on my (non-existent) php and MySQL skills now.
btw ApixDesigns, if I turn the volume down on the beeps, you want a link to your site too?!:beam:
Yeah, it kind of reminds me of a flash game i saw once… a sort of lights-out game, where some of the disks were turned over already, and some where not. The idea being to get them all turned over, as quickly as possible!
i kinda like the beeps. especially with the umbrella version. i just love the sound of rain and the light-blue flash you have there. top notch.
few pointers:
disable the right-click (when zooming a full screen flash, it goes all pear shaped)
how do i know what links im pressing? pretty annoying. or is that the whole point?
I like the concept and design. I have a few questions:
When a person hovers over the buttons there is no way at the moment to know what page will open up, do you intend to have it so a message box appears at the side saying which site it is?
If it gets going really well and there is perhaps 300 links, will you set it out so the links are put into categories? music, portfolios etc?
How do you intend to market the site and let people know you exist?
Just curious thats all. As I say, i think it’s great
perhaps you could put this link in: www.spree.us (although if you can’t see the site - that is because i got an email from the hosting company saying that they were making repairs to the server and it would be down for an hour today.
Cheers for the comments n compliments people, keep em coming, it’s really helpful getting feedback!
I’ll try and answer your post Salvador as it seems to sum up some of the questions re the site.
yeeaaah… there was kind of the point… or rather a point of the site. I got the idea from browsing themilliondollarhomepage and i was much more interested in clicking on the tiny ads where you didn’t know what you were going to see at the other end. But that was spoilt by having tooltips that shouted: FREE! CLICK HERE! WARNING! ATTENTION! CHANCE OF A LIFETIME! DON’T CLICK HERE! #$“#@”$"%!&!! stuff at you and stopped me from wanting to visit their site.
I guess it’s pretty drastic to not even know the site address though… hmm, I’m not sure. I kind of like the lack of information and the element of curiosity that is then involved in clicking a link. There are only 16 of them in the main design so it’s not tough to check em all out. As long as I don’t then betray that curiosity with a bunch of **** directories on the other end I was hoping the idea might catch on! Once the links are moved into the archive I was intending on displaying the link address and other related stats in the screen that falls down on rollover.
If it gets going really well and there is perhaps 300 links, will you set it out so the links are put into categories? music, portfolios etc?
again, I was thinking of more of an ecletic pot pourri mix of everything and anything… I mean there are plenty of portals, directories and search engines to search for specifics. I saw the site as being somewhere where people came to browse when they didn’t have anything particular in mind… killing time at the office etc.
but we’ll see. I’ll definitely think about it.
How do you intend to market the site and let people know you exist?
haha! mmm… good question! Word of mouth too naive?! I don’t like invasive ads or marketing techniques which is kind of why i made the site so I guess I have to trust my idea ! I’m hoping people will like it, put their sites up on it, get other people interested and build up a little community. At some point down the line it gets picked up by a blog or two and we’re away!
That may be just wishful thinking so I’m open to any ideas you guys might have!
Finally, yeah I’d love to put your link up (liked the site and the music!), do you think you could email me via my site, it would make it a little more official! (I’d have a copy for my records)
Once again, thanks a lot for taking the time to check the site out and post comments… i promise to meet any other questions with similarly oversized posts;)
ok - thanks for those replies Because it is flash and google won’t be reading any text in your site, perhaps you could have the title of your page as something descriptive like great website links and then google has a way of finding you if someone types in “great website links”
