3ds max: first lamp

it’s a lamp, first ever thing i’ve done in 3ds max.

looks a little out of propertion i.e. the base makes the lamp look very small and the pole thing loks really fat.

Good first one though

Not bad for a first go. Next try modelling a lamp that you actually have. Then you can really check dims/proportions and what not. Then you shld be able to get a pretty accurate model…unless you weren’t going for the realistic form…

Looks almost like a street lamp but on as a desk size lamp…

Got to start somewhere right!

yeah doesn’t look like a desk lamp to me but not bad for a first timer

doesn’t look half that bad. nice work for a first timer, although i bet you could do better on the lighting:)

thanks guys. i’ll take your points into consideration, and will try to make something better… and yeah, i wasn’t looking at a real lamp. i just did that from top of my mind…

Nice work kdd, reminds me of the tutorial for Swift 3d. While you make the changes add a wood texture to the bottom plane.

Nice for a first model. I know that you are just looking around in 3dsmax now, but try polygonal modeling… Its most probable, that you will end using polygons for modeling in max later. Lightning is kinda off but dont worry about that
Anyway its great for a first thing… When they showed me 3dsmax at school for the first time… belive me, it was much worse

haha. thanks guys. you really boost up my self-confidence. :stuck_out_tongue:
yes, i’ll do the wood texture, and better lighting.

here’s the second version. much much better. a question: i think i pressed some key and the config. is a little messed up for viewing objects. i’ve “smooth” selected as viewing objects. first, when i moved about the objects, they wouldn’t change the properties. now when i move about them, (when moving) they become wireframe objects… what do i have to change to get the original thing back… i hope you understood what i’m asking…

sorry about not making the surface wooden, lack of time…

lol- * i love lamp*

Yup lamp looks really awesome. Big improvement. I think where the stand joins the base is a bit skew wiffed, but thats only one movement.

I worked through these tuts to learn good lighting techniques. I’m not saying your lighting is bad, but this will help develop it  CGarchitect - start at the bottom with lighting basics, it is truely awesome…slow render times with skylights tho. Keep it up.

Not sure what your saying about moving and wireframe objects…they go wireframe when you move then in the viewport? I think mine always do…;( so never wanted to change it to solid…sorry

oh man, thanks so much about the link. actually, it took me a long time to figure out how to do that lighting… i’m really sure this’ll help.

and yes, that was my question about viewport. when i move in my viewport, the objects become wireframe. at first they stayed smooth, now they change to wireframe…

problem solved: key o was pressed… press key o to switch between wireframe or smoot (or whatever you’ve selected) mode.
