A career in website designing

This is to ElectronicGeek or lostinbeta or unflux or any proffesional webdesigners out there

I am about to go into college/university and have been accepeted into a new media studies program. I was just wondering does website designing offer good pay and is it worth it to go into this field?

Well I’m not anywhere near professionalism but I think basically you are paid for what you do, that is if you create more and more website you’ll get paid for the job, the more you do, the more references you get and everything starts evolving until you have your own firm I guess

Ask Kitiara I think she too works in design…
ANyway what college are you gonna go to ?

it all depends on your skills and how many program can you manage to use, a graphic artist gets paid 10 to 60 bucks the hour, a webpage programmer can get paid anything from 10 to 125 the hour, and if you do 3d animation u can get so much more, programmers get paid alot as well now what hapens if you know a few of these and are pretty good my best suggestion is start your own firm or small company why? because no one will pay you what youre knowledge is worth thats basically my problem here in Puerto Rico so im trying to start my own small incorporation wish me luck lol

hmm, 10 (or more) bucks a day sounds pretty good for me.

grimdeath, I guess I’m gonna take your advice too :), but does
government let me, 16 yrs old boy, start my own company? well,
I think that I’m gonna ask this my economy/business teacher =).

Lynx Designs&Developments, Inc. … :stuck_out_tongue:

i said 10 bucks the hour not the day if you work for 10 bucks the day i wil employ you myself lol thats 50 bucks a week rotflmao

Grim

in poland getting more than 20$ per hour is being filthy rich…
so if you’r interested in employing me - i’m in :beam:
i’m serious!

I wanna be a computer engineer at UCLA! But I’m only 13, and I donno about that yet, thats a long way away. (my sis goes to UCLA, and she has this friend in high school… and he went to college with her… the only think is that friend is 16 years old.)

[edit] tip: type 1-5 words per minute if your a programmer

twilight,
There are basically 3 types of Web Designing you can do.

  1. Freelance
  2. In House
  3. Both 1 and 2

Freelance work could pay really well if you have a consistent flow of work coming in, but it requires that you do a lot of ***** kissing and prospecting clients. The good thing about freelance work is that you set your own schedules, work your own pace and set your own pricing. The bad thing about it is that it’s not a stable source of income, there will be moments when you don’t have any work and moments when you have too much work.

In House work is when you work directly on site at the office or studio and you’re under a chain of management. This type of work is more stable and depending on the company you work for, you could even have benefits. Of course you’ll be paid hourly or salary depending on the size of the company and how good you are. Being an “in house” designer for a large company means you’ll be maintaining and updating already up sites, if you’re asked to create a new site, often time you’ll be working with a team of other designers and programmers. If you’re an “in house” designer for a small company then most likely it will be just you doing all the web work.

#2 takes a long time to build up your name & reputation. Don’t forget, your next door neighbor’s kid builds websites after school as well… You have to distinguish yourself from the rest of the pack, or be doomed to doing $500 websites.

In house is much more stable, and usually includes a bunch of other stuff than just web design…

Do 1 until 2advanced.com tells you to do 2 for them. Yeah. That’s what I’m gonna do.

hehe, I think working for a company is most time pretty boring. I spoke to a designer a while ago. And he is doing buttons all day long ;p And some css and stuff like that.
As a freelancer you have more liberty what to do…

there’s option #4:

bone up on a wider assortment of tech/computer skills - be the inHouse guy for all things computer (hardeware/network/webMaint./etc) for a smaller company (read non-design or computer related business) … and freelance here and there on the side with your design skillz until you’re good enough for the likes of 2advanced or to fly well enough on your own to not need the 9-5 security.

thats me there RelandR im the computer freak at where i work, and i also do desings, but trust me you dont get paid what youre supposed to but most of the time im dying to get out of there, cause im always bored out of my mind and i cant do my work there so if theres nothing to do i just sit there all day long waiting to get out of there and go to college it sucks man because i could be learning new programs like 3dsmax or cinema4d, premiere or after effects but im wasting my time there getting paid doing nutting wich really sucks, plus on top i get crappy pay and i get paid quaterly arrrrrrrrrrrgh now that makes the job suck even more im dying to get a new job
