Art School? Pros/Cons

I was wondering if i should go to an art institute and study web animation or web designebut i dont know much about the, are they good? what can you all tell me

heres my take on the situation, which may differ from other peoples opinions…

any web design or web animation course that can be taught at an art school (for a large fee), can be learned over the internet for free… its all about KIRUPA.com, and devoting your time!

the only advantages that i see, is that the time spent is mandatory, you gain access to the software and hardware that you would otherwise have to acquire yourself, and it puts you into an environment with other like-minded individuals…

some disadvantages: classroom environments can enhance or stifle creativity, depending on whether you are the best in the class, or one of the ‘biters’ in the end, all of you will be produced out of the same mold…

but then again, i never went to an art school, so it could be the right thing for you… its just not for me…
the current issue of adbusters had this advice, which i thought was pretty spot on…

HOW TO AVOID THE ARTIST TRAP:

  • NEVER GO TO ART SCHOOL
  • NEVER GO TO NEW YORK
  • NEVER RENT A LOFT

Howdy,

I go to an art institute. If you want a degree then I say, sure go ahead and go. If you want to do web design just get a job at a web firm. I dropped out of college the first time to work for a web design company. They basically trained me and taught me the programming I needed to know. I then moved onto work for another company. I have no web design degree, and if I wanted a job I could easily get a job at a web design company paying $20 or so an hour.

I am a Fashion student at the Art Institute here and it sounds bad but I kind of laugh at the kids in teh web design program. I could essentially test out of the whole degree and I was getting paid for the 3 years I was learing at those other web design companies.

I’m sure your decision will be right for you, however you choose.
