Big Buck Bunny Released!

The brilliant open source 3d package blender along with other open source apps like Inkscape and GIMP were the tools used to create the latest open source movie from the team that made Elephants Dream.

The new movie was just released online - and the cool thing about open source movies is - you can download all the project files to see how the animators did it!

Called “Big Buck Bunny” - it’s about a, well, big bunny…well, obviously more than just that, watch it and find out

The project also resulted in numerous advancements in blender’s capabilities, such as improved hair/fur

Check it out Here!

( PS Mods sorry if I made a booboo posting this in Computers/Tech too, I’m just an open source fan-boy who wants to get as much attention for projects like blender as possible  )

Amazing.

I was going to post this yesterday but didnt. :thumb:

You can review the NEW features in the: 2.46 Release Log
Reference/Release Notes - Blender Developer Wiki, along with all the other awesome features of Blender.

Also be sure to check out the Apricot Game Project based on the Big Buck Bunny movie. Also made with Blender 2.46.

 Glad you’re on the open source ball, so to speak, prg9…

Flash, FL Studio, some Native Instruments gear, and … grrrrr … Windows Vista :m: … are the only proprietary software I own… open source solutions do me for everything else (Notepad++ for coding, Inkscape for vector graphics, GIMP (tho it is kinda crippled still compared to PS) for raster, Filezilla for FTP, blender for 3d, 7-zip for zipping, and of course PHP/MySQL/Apache etc)

^ 7-zip owns! Glad to find another follower in the cult of 7-zip’ers.

Stop using Flash… and use FlashDevelop (plus FD’s better). 7-zip is great but not enough people have it.

When on windows I use 7-zip, notepad++, VLC, foobar2000, Flash Develop, Filezilla and infra recorder for burning CDs.

In my opinion, open source doesn’t mean “free”. It means you should try to contribute if you use it. Be that contributing with expertise to the community, help root out bugs, donate or in general try to help out the overall project.

But that’s my opinion. And that’s also why I only use 2 open source projects.

Of course that it doesnt mean “free”. It means that you can view and modify the code, but depending on the license of the app you can use/sell/distribute it with a stipulated limitations.

ya@ the thread starter…i do not know why but these last days i am more for openstuff…
[ot] judging by the trailer, the movie do look great… big studios got serieous comnpetions yay for open source[/ot]

I agree. I try and help by reporting bugs, and also by spreading the word to others  Maybe one day I’ll get good enough with programming to help out, that would be great too.

@Loyx - Yes I’m an FL addict, FL8 rocks!

@Templarian - Ive got FlashDevelop but never got round to using it - will try it out soon

You’ll still want to use Flash for compiling, but FD is a top-notch program for coding. For designing library assets Flash is still pretty much essential.

Just out of curiosity - is there an open source solution for creating swfs/animations - the graphical side I mean?

There’s no open source replacement for the Flash interface as far as I know, only the code.

i had that feeling, but thought i’d double check

The only Open Source things that I found regarding Flash were these (But yeah nothing apples for apples or even really close, but these are interesting atleast)

Pencil

KToon (looked promising but only Unix plus dev is SLOW)

Synfig

As far as compiling, use…

Flasc + MTASC compiler (alot faster than Flash IDE compiler)
http://osflash.org/projects/flasc

Cheers prg9 - some interesting stuff to check out

That looks like a neat solution unless you want to use AS3… :sure:

So use haxe instead for AS3 (didn’t know the discussion was AS3 exclusive :sure:)
