Candle, smoke, flame

I was able to recreate most of the smoke and candle example from the example provided to me from a CD at the back of a book I purchased, but I don’t understand how his version differs in these ways:

The book’s file is “smoke_shape_dissected.fla” and mine is appended with _Joe.

  1. His “smoke 2” graphic is exactly 32 frames long, each frame is a frame by frame animation. His “smoke 1” animation is exactly 59 frames long, and each frame is a frame by frame animation. Now, for his “smoke” movie, he has the smoke 2 graphic placed on a layer (smoke 1 layer) in the timeline for that movieclip, and he has keyframes placed throughout the timeline on that layer, one at frame 23, one at frame 34, and one at frame 54. Essentially the smoke is just a motion tween to a new location on the stage while changing alpha. No big deal there. But what I don’t understand is that is his “smoke 2” graphic is 32 frames long and he places a keyframe at frame 34, his smoke 2 graphic should start over again at it’s own frame one beginning at frame 33. That’s what happens to mine. How does he get his smoke to stay at the end of it’s life cycle without going back to frame one of the original smoke graphic?

  2. When I place my “glowing, flame candle” movie clip (with it’s own timeline, just like in the example) on the stage, mine does not play in the stage when I scrub. His does. What’s the difference and what am I doing wrong?

  3. Why does his flame/glow stop after 55 frames and mine does not? He doesn’t have any actions set.

Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong? I’m in my first Flash class, a little over halfway through…
