Convenience can quietly replace practice

automation is great until you realize you stopped doing the thing often enough to stay decent at it. i’m mostly thinking about the boring stuff here — shortcuts, templates, autofill, copilots — where the gain is obvious but the muscle memory fades in the background.

has anyone found a good line between making the easy path easy and not outsourcing the skill entirely?

I’ve had the best luck drawing the line at “automate the setup, keep the judgment manual. ” Like, I’m happy to let templates/autofill get me to a blank form that’s already 80% there, but I still force myself to write the last 20% where the actual thinking lives (wording, structure, what to leave out). Otherwise it’s like using GPS for every single drive — you get there, but you stop building the map in your head.
