Sparked by a crit in the critque section, I was pondering to what everybody is thinking, or gearing towards as the next B I G design trend.
Obviously, one cannot just ask what the next trend is because they take a time to either be developed, created, discovered, or to influence us.
I guess the purpose of this thread is to be a personal rant, for my disgust with the current and ever-growing “grunge/floral/multiple-circle/ink-splatter/anything that can be made into a brush and multiplied and thrown on top of imagery” trend.
Does it look cool? yes Does it work? yes It’s very aethestically pleasing, and enjoyable to look at. However like all trends, it’s so mainstream now and commercialized—frankly I’m getting bored with it.
One of the biggest tasks we have as designers is to constantly re-invent the wheel. We love it, that’s one of the biggest joys and tasks that we have is to take content, re-invent it and make it not only visually, but conceptually successful.
With the constant growth of the information age, we saw digital art that sparked 3d-modeling digital “pop” art—which gave way to the previous trend of what I call “tech”. The tech “look and feel” of abstract and 45-degree lines and various vector shapes, accompanied by masses of arbitrary digital code. The look and feel was great. It was new, exciting and refreshing, however it to soon became saturated and was everywhere. The same thing has happened now with “grunge”. Hell, even the grammy’s identity campaign this year was swimming in it.
So kirupians … what’s next? I myself love designing in a simple form. The whole less is more. Clean, crisp, sexy.
But, what is next? What are your opinions of what will fester next? What’s going on underground that will bare it’s head shortly?
Speak …
