Hi everyone! I just stumbled across a cool thing! This is a modified version of a DIY studio I saw on Strobist somewhere. IMO, mine is easier to build… and its free!
Ever wanted to do product shots like the pro’s? Well now you can! All you need is a cardboard box, some tracing paper, some large heavy paper (I used poster board), and some tape! Cut out 3 of the sides, left, right, and ceiling. Then cover the holes over with tracing paper. This not only lets light into the box, but diffuses it too! After all the holes are covered with tracing paper, take a piece of poster board and shove it in there. It should curve naturally, making a nice smooth seamless backdrop. I didn’t even need to use tape, so it could be easily replaced with black poster board if needed. Last, find a light source and put it outside one of the box’s windows. I used a strobe because i had one handy, but any light will do!
And there you go! Free pro quality studio:
I put the box in a corner so the light would reflect off the walls and back into the box to make it even softer. I also used the pop-up flash on the camera (at a very low setting) to fill in any dark spots a little.
heres some shots i just took with it. lol i just emptied my pockets and took pictures of what i had.
The text and the logos were just pulled off the manufacturers website to make it look more like a product shot.
Hope this helps some of you new photographers!

Edit:
Heres another modified version i just did! I got another box (lol, diet pepsi!) and cut out the bottom front and back. I cut a hole in the “ceiling” and replaced it with tracing paper again for my skylight. This made it so i could include the surface that the box is on in the picture. In this case I put it on the glossy coffee table. For a backdrop I had a white piece of poster board held up a ways behind it. To hold the strobe and the backdrop, i used the cheapest stand there is… my dad.
heres the setup:
the flash was positioned a little ways above the box aimed at the skylight. The single “skylight” makes it have a little harder light. It also makes it look more stylized imo.
heres the results!
experiment with “floors” for this box, its very versatile!
