Do adaptive AI enemies make games less readable?

Some games feel sharper when enemies adapt, but I keep wondering what gets lost when the rules stop staying put. In a multiplayer or even a shared single-player community, the same boss or match can stop meaning the same thing for everyone.

Has anyone felt that adaptive AI makes the game more interesting moment to moment, but worse at building a common player story?

Adaptive AI in games has been there for quite some time. Fighting games and FPS and maybe even some Action RTS games have been showcasing this for some time. AI-based enemies learning makes games more realistic, for it mimics how humans play.
