I don’t see the resemblance at all…
A: None of the characters even slightly match up.
B: The setting is completely different
C: Events that happen are completely different.
Now, if you mean that there are lots of similarities, than yes - but that can be said of any RPG. There happens to be a set of events which are common to every adventure story, which send the reader, or player through a series of stages, which can be applied to every tale, no matter what.
They are as follows:

[]**The ordinary World: **You meet the main character(s) in their familiar surrondings - they are in their element, and nothing is out of the ordinary. This would be Midgar (well, almost the entire planet) to Cloud, and Narshe to Locke.
[]**Call to Adventure: **The characters are confronted by something earthshattering, which changes their lives by calling them to adventure. This would be when Cloud gets asked to join AVALANCHE, and when Locke meets Terra, who obviously needs some help.
[]**Refusal of the Call: **The character feels uncertain about whether or not they should heed the call. I think this was Clouds entire perspective for most of the game, while - since its been awhile since I played VI, I don’t think this happened with Locke much (perhaps some of the other characters, which I’ll get into later)
[]Meeting of the Mentor: the Mentor provides guidance, and may impart magical, or some kind of powerful gifts to the adventurer(s). I can’t come up with a good example from either game, but that doesn’t nessecarily mean there isn’t one.
[]Crossing the Threshold: This is when the character leaves what they consider normal behind to the dangers beyond. This would be when AVALANCHE goes on the second mission, and has to jump the train too early, or in VI, when Locke escapes Narshe with Terra.
[]**Allies, Enemies, Tests: **While trying to deal with the main problem, the characters are surrounded by those who would hurt or help them. No big explanation needed here. Random Battles.
[]Approach of the Final Cave: After dealing with all the pidly things on the way to solve the big problem, the characters reach the point-of-no-return. In VI, this would be Kefka’s Tower, and in VII, the aptly-named: “Final Cavern”. Original.
[]**The Ordeal: **The characters must struggle with their final, and greatest enemy at the risk of sanity, soul, and life. This is the battle with Kefka, and Sephiroth.
[]**The Reward: **The character acheives their goal. With Cloud, this was the final solo battle with Sephiroth in his mind. I think Lockes goal was to kill Kefka himself.
[]**The Road Back: **The character heads home after defeating their foe. With VII, and to some degree VI, I think this is tied into:
[]Resurecction: The characters face one last severe test, which symbolizes the fact they have changed. Escaping the collapsing tower in VI, and the Collapsing Cave in VII, plus the final ‘confrontation’ with Meteor.
[]Return with the “Elixer”: The character returns to their ordinary world with whatever it is that will save that world. VII had Holy, and I guess VI was simply the fact that Kefka didn’t get to destroy everything.
[/list] Well, this is not exact - in fact, if you really analyxed it, you would see that throughout these, and almost all games, the story goes through several cycles of these events - sometimes not in order.
But I come back to the main point - asside from soem genre based similarities, the two games are completley different.
Look at the villians: Sephiroth has his Oedipus/Meglomaniacle Complex, and wants to become all powerful - and to do this he must destroy the World. This is a nessecary step to his ascension.
Kefka wanted to become godlike in order to destory the world. Major difference. This was pleasure to him - his final goal was the destruction of everything. Kefka = loony.
There are similarities - their are lots of differences. But to me, and I’ve played both games start-to-finish more than once, they are no more related then Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears.
'Sides, FFVI was the better game (story, and gameplay)
Sure VII looked a whole hell of a lot better, and had some cool movies, but VI had the better story, and the battles were more fun.
