which program is better and what are their advantages over each other?
Both are vector based, the advantage with freehand is that you can export it to flash easier than Illustrator.
Illustrators interface is a little more tried and proven. I found getting around the demo version of freehand a bit more difficult… but perhaps I’m just more used to adobe products.
Depends on what you use more: Adobe or Macromedia programs.

If you use flash alot your best bet would be freehand since the round trip editting and integration is super tight. It makes thing some much easier. You can go back and forth between proggy without exporting it is amazing. Tools wise I have not found mcuh diffence except that freehand seems to have more live effects thhat do not destroy the image (like rasterizing) and you can stack them. All in all I would say Freehand MX has ill beat but then again like blue said…Maybe im used to macromedia products.
