I searched through Microsofts amazingly un-user friendly support database for a solution or tech note, but came up dry…
Sorry I dont have my wireless card here to give the exact model # but here is how I screwed up my laptop:
It had tons of problems so I figured I would just format and start fresh. Install XP pro and get up up and running/online with my Netgear wireless card using the netgear drivers.
So I then go to windows update to get SP2 and other security updates. (All using the WI-FI card)
So after everything downloads and installs I restart. On boot I get a prompt asking me if I would like to use the MS software for WI-FI gives me all this crap about added security and what have you. So I select it. (which is stupid because I didnt research it first) Again restart
Now I have no wi-fi access at all. Configured everything correctly, set up ssid, wep… nothing… cant even find my network let alone connect to it.
Ok fine - tried to reinstall the netgear drivers for my card agian… and windows isnt having it. As soon as I click the .exe to run the setup Windows immediatly nixes the proccess and gives me the good old defailt windows warning sound.
I tried to remove all of my network connections and start fresh but XP wont let me do it. What the hell is up with that?, I have administrator permissions to the machine.
Is there any way to revert back to the netgear drivers or get rid of the awful MS Wi-FI software?
BTW
I can get online hard wired (which is a pain in the *** because the length of cat-5 I have coming out of my wall is barely long enough to reach my coffee table) and my buddies laptop talks to the netowrk via my wi-fi card so I know all my hardware is good to go.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated
