A friend of mine told me he was going to miss out on a BB-Q cause he was goin down to southern california. His trip to that forsaken land was to see Linkin Park in concert. We had a little discussion about this and I raised the point that TOOL is really good. He said “Linkin Park kicks TOOL’s ***.” I think Linkin Park is rather formulaic and lacks real creativity/meaning in their music. Their greatness is more of a combination of good timing, and fantastic marketing. TOOL is legitimately good music, creative, and experimental.
So here is the fundamental question: in the current music industry climate, has marketing finally utterly overpowered quality music? Five or ten years down the road, will the right look still be more important than the right sound?
Sub question: Who is more at fault for this disturbing trend, the labels, or the consumers?
