A friend of mine told me he was going to miss out on a BB-Q cause he was goin down to southern california. His trip to that forsaken land was to see Linkin Park in concert. We had a little discussion about this and I raised the point that TOOL is really good. He said “Linkin Park kicks TOOL’s ***.” I think Linkin Park is rather formulaic and lacks real creativity/meaning in their music. Their greatness is more of a combination of good timing, and fantastic marketing. TOOL is legitimately good music, creative, and experimental.
So here is the fundamental question: in the current music industry climate, has marketing finally utterly overpowered quality music? Five or ten years down the road, will the right look still be more important than the right sound?
Sub question: Who is more at fault for this disturbing trend, the labels, or the consumers?
Good marketing far outweighs good music, which is obvious. I guarantee that 9 out of 10 people would never have even heard of the bands I listen to, and I personally feel they are much much better than what is shoved down our throats my MTV. Of course I haven’t heard bands that other people listen to either, due to genres and what have you, but almost everything highly publicized is packaged crap that people for some reason or another seem to enjoy.
I feel that is the consumers fault, they have the ability to choose what they want to listen to but generally go with what is hip and cool. I think this is because we are all naturally insecure and it is human nature to want to fit in, which causes people to listen to what everyone else is. The labels and music distributors etc are just making money, they’re doing what they are supposed to do. Of course they are partially to blame because they shove crap as opposed to good music down our throats.
i don’t even consider lincolon puke to be a band. Talk about selling faces and catchy lyrics instead of music. Its a no brainer they are a shallow group. Not even close to the artists from Tool.
yea marketing helps but doesn’t out weigh the music
Its accutaly a waaaayy stronger force than this… you want proof?
Take a band like The Tea Party, extremly good band, famous in Canda, but completle unheard of in the USA… why?
Because they aren’t marketed. They where going to be introduced to the USA, but when the Record labeles told them what kind of music to play, Tea Party band said ‘no’. And because of that they are black listed in the USA with other recording labels.
Or… How about this… I do enjoy listening to Linkin Park on the occasional mood… So what?
Now… TOOL may not be “as” popular as Linkin Park but they are still popular none the less…
The only reason find MTV exploits or Pop shows to be crappy is because you don’t personally like them and you have a major issue with others obviously liking them…
Now… Sure some people only like bands to say… Ohh I’m cool… I like such and such… Or… any of the such like that.
Most bands out there have the chance to become more popular than another band… If TOOL was meant to be more popular or if they wnated to be more popular than Linkin Park… they could easily talk to some marketting managers and figure out how to “reach” the public better.
I don’t have favourtie bands, I’m not a hardcore music buff and I don’t understand those who are. I listen to everything and anything that’s catchy.
If I had to pick a favourtie band I’d say three days grace 'cause I used to party with those guys and used to always say ‘man you guys are good! You should be on the radio!’ and I’m glad they are now.

They do this to make sure they make MONEY out of the whole entire deal… If they don’t think they are going to gte money out of the songs they here… Then they won’t go for them…
It’s like this… If you had a business and you wanted to say… Hire a new employee… Now… Your business has to do with video game programming… Now… Lets say you have two great employees to pick from…
A Major Computer Programmer : He loves to program computers and is great at it… But… he doesn’t want to create the games that you want to create…
A great computer programmer that will conform over and reate some of the games that your business wnats to create…
Are you going to hire the guy that doesn’t wnat to conform or do you want to hire the guy who will be the most compatible?
If the band doesn’t want to conform then they don’t have to make anything in the US market… shrugs… it’s there choice.

How can you personally like them? All bands are fake to some degree. Music is a business!
Hey Marz, I wasn’t judging you for liking them. My point was that you really don’t know them so how can you really like them. A lot of people now don’t like Fred Durst and Snow (white raggae/rapper/canadian/artist). My opinion of them is that they did a good job for themselves and I’d probably get along with them one on one. I say that Kurt Cobain’s and idiot 'cause he blew his brains out. I like the ‘idea’ of popular bands but I know that in one way or another they’re putting up a front.
How can you like your computer if you don’t really “know” the company who made it?
This goes on all levels man… I’m not going to shun a musician or a band because they have done something to get where they are today… Kurt Cobain I agree is a moron for blowing his brains out… But he was a good musician and I like some… Note some of the songs they play

Sounds like a personal opinion to me. If you actually looked into the band, you’d see they are very creative. Just because you don’t necessarily like them does not mean they suck. How can you call them shallow when you know nothing at all about them? Do some research, get back to me with some evidence, and prove they’re shallow… I’d like to see that. :sigh:
On the other hand, people like Britney Spears who don’t write their own music, and sing a song once in the studio and then sing over the studio version live, are not creative. I can’t respect that. Britney Spears was marketting from day 1. All those pop people who get music handed to them deserve a cold shoulder.:trout:
Another great Canadian band thats not that popular in the states is “Finger Eleven” what a killer rock band, its a shame they aren’t more popular.
