Here are my honest thoughts and opinions…

1)What are your first thoughts when you see it?
You guys do webdesign?? The site looks very amatuer.

2)How are the load times?
Fast.

3)Should I not have any sound on the buttons or make them not as loud?
They were a bit loud and in my face.

4)Is any of the information not clear?
Well nothign really grabbed my attention so I didn’t read much. Just got bored and left.

5)Do you feel that it would be easy for people that are a litlle internet illiterate to navigate?
Yes, but will it be interesting enough to grab their attention?

6)Is anything wrong with the flash header (too simple, complex, generic, etc…?)
Too Generic, Too Simple, not polished or professional looking.

7)What do you think of pricing for the average business owner?
Hard to say. What is the average business owner? You’re pricing is good for people with no budget.

8)What else should I change or play around with?
A whole new design.

9)What should I add to improve it?
Tone done the super bright colors. Make it more interesting and unique.

Any other comments?
Nope.

Thanks for yor quick and honest reply Ethan,
I have a couple of questions for you:
1)“You guys do webdesign?? The site looks very amatuer.” …can you show some examples of good design/hosting sites?
4-5)Do you have any ideas for making my site grab your attention, but stay easy to use?
6) should I redo the header?, or how can I fix it?
9)“Make it more interesting and unique.”…my first priority is to make the site easy to use and get pricing/design information, do you have any examples of sites that are both easy to use and unique? (i dont want to make a crazy flash or javascript site, as im intrested in keeping it sleek or simple)

Thanks for taking the time to check out my site

Any one else have comments?

 1. no tables, or atleast no visible tables
 2. load times fine on my cable connection
 3. light pastel colors on white background can be very hard to read <especially in design and hosting>
 4. very straight forward
 5. definately generic, but headers are something you can develop over time
 6. I’d get rid of pricing all together, depending on your market you’ll probably want to meet the client first, guage their level of engagement <ie. how much of a pain in the *** they’ll be> and what kind of business they’re in. A small town gift store can spend way less than a car delearship in the same town, though it might take equal amount of time, try not to undersell your services.
 7. color scheme, font choice
 8. ditch the testimonial, the photo looks like something out of free image package, and doesn’t match your site. it’s a good start, keep working at it!

…can you show some examples of good design/hosting sites?
4-5)Do you have any ideas for making my site grab your attention, but stay easy to use?

Look through this Site Check forum. There are some good examples of well done sites. Then move onto the Sites of the Week forum. Those are done especially well. Then look over some of the online directories for award winning sites, www.linkdup.com has some great sites to look at.

Cheers.

Thanks for the help 3rdeye,
some questions for you
1)“no tables”…what do u mean, is it bad that I have no visible tables?
7)good ideas on pricing
9)I hate the testimonial photo too, but im having trouble finding good stock photo’s of people. Does anyone know where I could find some? [photos.com has good ones but they charge way too much for me. I know about sxc.hu but I cant find any good stock phots w/ white bg’s]

Ethan, thank you for the link, thats exactly what I was looking for.

Anyone else have some critiques?

can’t
connect
to
server…
:-/

the site was down a couple of times but just for short times, it should be working right now

1)“no tables”…what do u mean, is it bad that I have no visible tables?
well I could be on alot of drugs, or firefox may be rendering it differently than IE but to me I see one table on the opening page and another in hosting both looking like the stock HTML table everyone used 4 years ago. Just make 'em invisible, and if you need to seperate rows, use a custom made horizontal rule and stick 'em between rows of info…

9)I hate the testimonial photo too, but im having trouble finding good stock photo’s of people. Does anyone know where I could find some? [photos.com has good ones but they charge way too much for me. I know about sxc.hu but I cant find any good stock phots w/ white bg’s]
this is easy… TOSS THE TESTIMONIAL! it’s cheesy, your work will speak for itself, and since the testimonial text is cut off and doesn’t lead anywhere, it seems even more forced… and false… Instead spend some time looking for clients, or friends where you can improve your design skills and start a portfolio section… or redesign someone else’s site which you think is crap… you need a body of work, more than a testimonial to get the clients through your portal

 1. Childish, and very cookie cutter, fonts are big and bulky… not as professional as your slogan builds you up to be.

 2. Quick… but then again it’s a hybrid site… like 98% html 2% flash… if it loaded slow that would be disapointing.

 3. No sound is better than what you’ve got… scared the crap outta me, sounds like one of the first sounds that someone ever made on a computer. Maybe try something lighter and more subtle.

 4. Well the info is fine but again… the layout is bad.

 5. Yea, very ez to nav… not sexy… but ez

 6. Flash header… where to start… toooo simple… not very impacting… which is one of the purposes of a header IMO.

 7. Pricing is ok… but the packages aren’t that great either… it would help ppl decide if they knew what kind of servers and backbone you were on.

8 & 9) Looooots of work… I would take Ethans suggestion and try to rework it.

Final note(s)

 1. What’s the purpose of having a flash nav? It serves not apparent purpose, the banner could be done w/ an animated gif, the only purpose it serves I guess would be for sound? Which can still be done w/ JS.

 2. Weeeeeee… if you hold your mouse over the buttons they just keep clicking and you can scroll and everything… and you’ll see some funky TechOverload logoish thing keep appearing… not to mention I get to hear the beautiful sounds :-/

 3. You need CSS

 4. The secondary nav… not really neccesary, they are used on site that require you to scroll down… thus loosing the top nav, and us being lazy the ppl we are, on the internet, it takes to much effort for us to scroll back up… resulting in the need for the nav at the bottom.

 5. Contact form… you can fill out anything and it will send… you need to have it so the address part of it verifies that it’s an actual address… I think I put like adfsda3 or something as my e-mail and it accepted it.

Hands hurt so I’ll stop now.

Thank you every1 for helping me out, Im making a new site hopefully it will be better. When I believe I am done i’ll post a new thread to let everyone tear apart my next site:P

he he, dont take it to heart m8…weve all been there! look forward to seeing your next attempt!

Sorry if there’s any repeats, I just don’t have a lot of time to read all the replies right now.

1)What are your first thoughts when you see it?
Too much white, there is too much white space going on and everything that is not white is either light blue, almost white or black which is a very hard contrast on the eyes.

2)How are the load times?
Load times are fine, but the header took a second, I suggest starting the header with a pre-loader.

3)Should I not have any sound on the buttons or make them not as loud?
Change the sound, most people have once or twice used a computer and are too familiar with that sound. Check around at www.flashkit.com. They have a nice collection of freeware sounds.

4)Is any of the information not clear?
The information seems pretty clear but the headers and anything in light color are hard to read.

5)Do you feel that it would be easy for people that are a litlle internet illiterate to navigate?
Probably, but the upper right navigation might be a little confusing to the internet illiterate. Remember that most people read left to right whether they are using the internet or not.

6)Is anything wrong with the flash header (too simple, complex, generic, etc…?)
The flash header is alright, but it seems too generic. The map like picture is way overdone and the simple animations with low frame rate make it seem quite amateur. I liked the mouseovers but the font is hard to read. Perhaps use a little more of the space in the header, use more images. Try more effects for the text such as fades or masks. Definitely up the framerate, it looks really choppy.

7)What do you think of pricing for the average business owner?
Pricing really isn’t my forte, but it looks pretty cheap to me.

8)What else should I change or play around with?
Darken your colors up a little more, they are way too light and you could use more contrast. All the headers for the content need to be darker, they are increadibly hard to read on the white background.

9)What should I add to improve it?
For the content area, try using a light color or anything besides white, there’s just too much of it and it makes it harder on the eyes. Try playing with the color scheme in general, the colors with black give it a very amateur feel to it. Use some css styles and give your text more life. Add more colors and variations to the font sizes. Perhaps add a little more to the content of the site, an image or two shouldn’t add too much to the download size. Ecspecially to the contact section of the site, it’s like a sentance of text and huge amounts of white space. It gives a feel of incompleteness.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but it just needs quite a bit of work to get it sleek and professional looking and up to the standards your site claims. Good luck with it and don’t be discouraged.

Thanks Wanyo,
Dont worry im not discouraged, this thread inspired me to start a couple of designs and helped me realize that I shouldnt be lazy and try to do everything all in one design. When I start designs now, I think ill try to start with a simple design and build on it without worrying about load times, navagation, etc… until the design looks good.
