How did you learn flash?

Can anybody recommend a beginner to intermediate level flash book? I understand the basics of flash and do HTML and databases daily. Would it be better to just go with an ActionScript type book and pickup the beginner to intermediate stuff here?

Also,
What have you done to learn flash?

Please share your experiences and methods to learning I think a lot of the beginners would like to know how the GURUs of this forum came to their level of experience. Did you take classes in school, just pick it up, did you hit the gene pool or what?

Thanks!

I learned flash by searching the forums =)

<-- is not a Guru…but,

I couldn’t find a book that was intermediate when I was searching for a book. Either the books are really simple stuff (like chapter 34 - hot to tween) or so complicated I get a nosebleed. I started with a $40 quickstart (the one with the bunny on it) book that was very beginner. After finding this and other forums/tutorial sites - I threw the book away. :stuck_out_tongue:

<----Idiot

Learned flash by playing around and asking for lots of help, and playing around. Read 1/2 of a beginner book and found it pointless.

learned a little bit in school, learned a lot on Kirupa !

What Im seeing is ditch the beginner books and learn by practicing.

Maybe just an AS book.

yup, use the reference in Flash MX, once you know how to call methods and use functions, it’s all reference

Learned the graphical side by ‘playing’ with it and trying to recreate certain effects.

Learnt the AS by using my Java knowledge, loosely. Course i had to read about creating functions etc.

Taking tutorials i did too, taking a lot of them.

Viru.

you got it :thumb:

O’Reiley or whatever makes a little reference book now that’s really helpful, it’s basically a print version of the reference in flash mx but it has examples etc… and a little more explaination. I would get that and then start doing the tutorials on Kirupa and then make a couple sites trying to incorporate the material from the tutorials on your own. Doing is the only way to learn this crooked *** ****.

Thanks all - good ideas!:nerd:

i’ve read 3,5 books (2 of them really helped me out)
did some work when i was bored

First I unbuttoned my shirt, then I took it off. Then I took off my pants, then began to… oh wait… you don’t mean that kind of flashing… sorry :x

I learned from experimentation and hard work. I haven’t read any books (yet at least), I mainly stuck to this site/forum to search for answers to my questions, but overall I just started going through the AS Reference in Flash and checking out what looked interesting and experimenting with some of it’s possible uses (that I could think of at least).

Also google.com comes in handy when looking for specific help on what something does or how to do something in Flash. I found a lot of answers to my questions there. If searching and trying to figure it out on my own didn’t help I would ask for help

I hope that was the right kind of “learning to flash” adviced you wanted

Yes, that was what I needed to hear… must everyone seems to have just hacked through flash to learn it, same way I did HTML and ASP.

Yeah, the best way usually to learn is to hack through it and learn from experience what works and what doesn’t.
