Is a suit to formal for a debate?

ok so im in debate and me being the smart person i am, (sarcasm) went out and bought a suit for debate…even got alterations done (even smarter so now i cant return it)…so now i hear that most ppl just wear a tie and some slacks to debates…would it be allright if i wore a suit cuz i just spent ~$200 on a suit…dad will be very pissed
