I got to agree with Blindlizzard, we aren’t going in to Saudi Arabia, by all reasons we should, but the top 5 million who own the country let us use it, also are “cooperating” with us, I dont know how much help they are really but at least they are saying they are. Like Roosevelt said; “they might be sons’ of *****es, but they are our sons of *****es”, same reason we supported ruthless Zaire president and the Shah from pre-modern Iran.
Iran, I don’t think will westernize, yet.
Because, there is pattern of Islamic resurgance going on right now, Iran, like the Saudies and many other Islamic countries want to modernise, but not westernize. Like most countries there right now, Iran, is identefing more and more with Islam, and who they are. The memory of the nationalist of the Shah is still fresh in their minds, and how western intrest in oil overthrew the last Democraticaly elected Prime minister.
