Jessica Lynch and the Bronze star

This is another post I saw, on a Military study forum, and I wanted your thoughts on it.

Saving Private Lynch

To put it plainly, I find it immensely distasteful that the military and the media are making such a meal of Jessica Lynch’s return home. No problem with her receiving the Purple Heart or the PoW medal but a Bronze Star?
She was not shot and stabbed' as initially claimed, she had RTA injuries after her vehicle crashed into the one in front after taking a wrong turn. She did not take up a lone defence’ and empty her weapon' against the Iraqi army as initially claimed, her gun jammed. She was rescued with no resistance offered (although the rescue team did fire at one poor sod who was trying to bring her out). She was certainly not fighting to the death’ as the media were informed at the time of her capture. As later emerged it was care given to her by the Iraqis that helped her survive at all. I’m sure she’s a lovely person and I don’t blame her for any of this but awarding her the Bronze Star for being in a car crash just makes a mockery of the Bronze Stars awarded to other recipients in this and other conflicts. I think it bites…

I must admit I agree with this, Why does she get special treatment when other POW’s dont?

I think the media is simply overplaying this situation :alien: She should not get more treatment than any other American soldier who suffered similar fates.

I already tried to get a discussion on this going…

it went nowhere…

Rev

because reverendflash, that’s only as far as it can go.

The media has definitely overexaggerated this woman. The real ‘heroes’ of this so-called war are those that have died representing their country. Their names don’t get flashed all over the news or papers. Theirs is left for the marquee on the CNN morning report.

it happens in every war… some hapless grunt gets awarded the bronze star because he was in the right place when the camera/propaganda officer was looking in the right direction.

and the real heros go unnoticed.

this one was just cute and female… next war maybe it will be a person of color’s turn…

j/k that was rude… sorry

this topic kills me, and I’m a pacifist, with no ties whatsoever to the military.

Rev

I hear you, i’m a pacifist too. I still regret registering for the selective service when I turned 18.

Did I mention she also received the Purple Heart for courage?

yes, but she was injured in a battle zone, during a war, eventually becoming a POW. I think that deserves a purple heart.

She did nothing cowardly, but roughly in her own words, “I remember getting tossed from the vehicle, then next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital.”

and what’s with the gay French hats?

Rev

um, i don’t think you should call them “gay”, some of our fellow <strike>mods</strike> users may take offense

Ok, so she deserves the Purple Heart. But does she really need the attention of her whole home town as well as the US?

I meant gay, as in “Gay Paris” …

as in “The Gay 20’s”

I’m curious lorcas… do you know who Audie Murphy is?

Rev

He was a highly decorated hero of World War II. Medal of Honor, all the decorations for valor the US had, as well as some from Europe. Killed a lot of the enemy from what I hear.

Why?

just curious. He was made into a movie star, an unwilling one at that… all for the PR effect.

I didn’t know if they still taught about him is all, no offense intended.

there were others that were awarded medals without due cause. It always happens during war. This one, however, was just portrayed on the Evening News, and couldn’t keep the real story under wraps forever. That being said, I doubt this will be the last one either. America wants heros, and will be gullible as heck and believe whatever story the Gov’t spews.

JMO tho.

Rev

I think America consider’s their heroes to be the ones who are up and alive, because if it’s every boy and girl’s dream to be a hero, in America, I don’t think our country will glamourize those who were killed and consider them a hero. Of course, that’s just my view. I know there are some out there who would rather die young famous than live a long life without being known.

she emptied her gun into the enemy while standing in the sand…endured being captured, and survived…she is

AWESOME!

Of course pr - nobody is doubting her heroics. But, there were several others who probably fought just as bravely as her, and I just do not think it is fair that she is getting deserved media attention while the others do not. I’d rather have all 15-20 (I’m not sure of the number) of the POWs shown on TV (they can take all day for all I care), rather than iconizing Jessica.

I would rather have everyone know that she was a hero among many instead of, what it seems, the only hero to have made it out.

prstudio, her gun jammed dude… she never fired a shot.

she was slaped twice by a guard,

then spent the rest of the time lying in a hospital, after a failed attempt of one of the Doctors to return her to the American Lines…

No bullterwounds, no torture,

All she did is run her humvee in the back of a 5-ton…

I personaly, dont beleive there is anything heroic…

she has publically denied this. It was made up by the media, according to her.

[edit]and they made a wrong turn in the first place. otherwise, she wouldn’t have been ambushed. [/edit]
