In business class, we are learning about motivation and what keeps workers motivated to, well, work. We’ve studied Mazlo’s theorem based on fulfilling needs that haven’t be met to create motivation.
eg. giving a worker who works in poor conditions, already paid well, more money will not motivate the worker. But giving that person better working conditions will. Makes sense right?
Well, considering many people go to work unmotivated and rather lazy, why don’t businesses focus more on their workers than their bottom line? Because, in the end, the company will have huge benefits of having motivated workers. If you look deeper into society, many problems could be solved by simply motivating people to do well, and giving them the right things in the right places.
What motivates people? Post your thoughts, and personal theories
I think different people are motivated in different ways. I personally am only motivated by money. I used too be a bill collector. I worked at a few different places collecting, and I was most motivated at the place with the worst conditions because the bonus structure was great. I dind’t care that my chair was falling apart. I didn’t care that my monitor was hard to read. All I cared was that the harder I worked the more I took home. Another place I worked collecting had a great atmosphere, all new desks and chairs, nice computers, everything they could do to make it a nicce environment. But, I was very unmotivated knowing I made crap, and with that i didn’t work as hard. I enjoyed coming to work everyday and getting all the nice stuff, but when it came time to acctually work and collect money, I deffinatly didn’t work as hard to do it there then the place with the big bonus structure.
Oh, and another note on conditions of work:
where I work, there are telivisions playing advertising allll the time. I mean it never stops. It’s a dvd disc that plays about 45 mins of ads and then starts over. This is fine maybe for the first week it plays, for like, twice. Then it starts to drive you mad.
And when we do inventory, we listen to music. I work SOOOO much better with music on, I’m happy, and I just don’t midn doing anything. Even if we played a movie, I think productivity would increase by so much. besides, when I walk into a video store I expect a movie to be playing; if not I feel angry that the company thinks that little of me. They are trying to force-feed me advertisment instead of entertain me; gee, thought that was their job, to provide entertainment. Sorry, ads are rarely entertaining, and especially not from a large company that wants to please everyone.
Sorry maybe thats off topic.
