Macromedia products

im considering purchasing the macromedia products…
i currently own flash MX and was considering the following

dreamweaver
contribute
fireworks
coldfusion
jrun
central
freehand
director

if you think that i have no need for any of these…please tell me…i am not worried about wasting money…becasue i dont care…i will buy them all if i hafta…but give some input on these programs please

Getting all the softwares in the world is one thing learning how to use them is another thing, in other words

why don´t you first learn how to use one program before you move to your second program or are you intelligent enough to learn all the programs at once?

Ask that first…

ok…i pretty much know flash MX…and i hear a lot about these other programs…and i want to learn them…because i want to have a carreer in web design someday…and the more i know…the more help i will be!!!i hope

you should only get them if you need them. If you’re getting like 3 though, 3 that are in the studio, then you might as well just get Studio MX since it will be about the same and you get the full collection. It doesnt include director or jrun and only a developer edition of coldfusion, but it still beats full price for them all (I have studio).

Contribute you dont need if you have dreamweaver. Contribute is the dumbed-down version of dreamweaver for non-developers. You would suggest contribute to a client you made a site for in dreamweaver so that they could easily update it themselves.

central you wont need to purchase

jrun and coldfusion are server-based products which I doubt you would have much if anything to do with.

Director is cool but expensive and not part of studio. Its pretty typical for CD authoring and makes shockwave files. Flash is almost in the same class though Director is like the next step up (‘hefty’ in comparison) and supports 3D.

As a web developer, I only use Flash, dreamweaver, fireworks and occasionally freehand. I also work in Director but only for CD projects for work.

Flash and Dreamweaver are the biggies. Dreamweaver for websites and Flash for… well websites too but with more ‘flash’ and interactivity. Plus Flash is just fun. Fireworks is great too - a great companion to both Flash and dreamweaver but you can get by without it if you have photoshop. Still, there are somethings in Fireworks that are better than what you have comparably in photoshop/imageready (but at the same time fireworks is no photoshop).

Freehand is nice, and good for print vector work. For web vector work, though, all you really need is Flash for web stuff. Personally, Im more about Freehand for outlines and laying out ideas. There are some tools there that make doing that a breeze.

I say if you’re really wanting to get into the web field and you have some money to spend but not a whole lot, definitely take the studio route. And see how much it is for an upgrade from Flash MX too, since that should give you a break in price.

would it be pretty easy to learn director if you have some experience in flash ie does it has action script, and if yes, is it the same?

btw, how much does director cost?

each one of those products takes years to master and you don’t need them all as a web developer. Keep working with flash. Dreamweaver is nice for building web pages and it is the most complex web developing software out there which jacks up the learning curve. Many web developers don’t even use dreamweaver though as there are other, cheaper solutions that you can use. If you do a lot of images your are going to need a program like Fireworks, Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro. The most popular is Photoshop but if you like macromedia products Fireworks is fine. Thats my 2 cents. Look at senocular’s post for the rest of the products on your list as I have never used them.

Don’t get in over your head though, learn one thing at a time to avoid feeling overwelmed.

ok…so dreamweaver flash fireworks and freehand should be good enough

fontographer—make custom fonts

Really wanna spend cash

Flash Remoting

Flash Communication Server

heh 3d-iva. I really really think he doesn’t need the last two on that list. Unless he like…runs a web dev company with a team of developers I guess and their making really dynamic flash web sites.

Y don’t you download the demos first? Try them out and see if you’ll need them and how much you like them. Macromedia has all these 30-day trials for a bunch of their programs.

yeah thats why at the bottom I put If you really wanna spend cash,…he said money is no object…so…

FlashComm server and FlashRemoting is for anyone who wants to do that kind of stuff…Not just design firms
