I knew I was going to rate in at 0% but I posted it up anyway for the little feedback you get back from the kirupa mods. So I wait and wait and yes I was right 0% votes but where is the feedback? :upset:
Hey jdl!
I’ll try to get the feedback in soon. I and the other mods are probably busy, but I’ll try to get some feedback from either me or the other mods in shortly
You know I was thinking after reading my feedback , how disappointing it was because honestly I couldn’t do without kirupa for tuts- it’s gotta be the most intelligent flash forum I know on the net. I’ve read other disgruntled users opinions also on here about feedback but you take it with a huge grain of salt because there’s just so much stuff out there. I guess what I’m saying is , if you are going to have an official section for comment by mods- remember how many put their trust in you- and perhaps don’t give feedback unless you have the time and resources to do some justice with your comments. For instance I had a preloader with an animation to keep people busy while they wait but the feedback I got on it was as if the person didn’t even understand that. I could tell their feedback was hurried and ill-considered.
Also, alot of sites that are highlighted are very similar- corporate and slick- absolutely deserving but not on all levels. There should be first of all people not hurried for time to judge and secondly perhaps a number of categories to submit under.
I expect the best from this forum because I respect it but I’m thinking kirupa mods need to rethink their approach in this area to become more professional.
I don’t know jdl - the judging and voting is quite fair. The polls stay up for 3 or 4 days. Moderators have plenty of time to select the sites that they vote for, and as you can tell by the results for your week, not all of them voted for the same site.
The critiques are just that - critiques. They aren’t step-by-step tutorials on how you should design your site. We just give you some opinions and things that you can work on, and it’s up to you to use your design skills to fix it yourself.
What the mods and I look for is quality and cleanness. I can’t speak for them, but when I look for a site, I look at the sharpness of the text/images, the quality of the transitions, and various usability features such as button rollovers, lack of pop-ups, ability to turn sound off, etc.
Please realize that it takes a long time to critique SOTW and I urge you, we don’t rush it.
Secondly, most sites that win SOTW have a lot in common because they are the best on the net. I’m not going to publically bash your site but IMO it did not have SOTW material.
And that’s fine man, I don’t make SOTW sites
Edit: please remember as well, mods have lives and other committments as well. we all give KirupaForums 100% effort but sometimes that’s not good enough.
No fair enough - I know the mods do it it on a volunteering basis which is cool- just thought I’d mention a suggestion for perhaps a small variety of subset submissions.
As in, flash movies, flash animations - not all navigational. Or even submissions per individual because obviously an amazing site by a corporate group is going to have a huge advantage over an individual. And what about that amazing site by the 16 yr old(?) with the clowns- I’m far more impressed by that as one young individual creating in flash than a group of seasoned professionals.
Oh sorry forgot to mention pop ups ! I learnt how to do centred pop ups on kirupa - in fact I’ve probably learnt most from kirupa tutorials - if the mods don’t favour pop ups - why are they included in tutorials? At age 44 and a mum with no -one I know that vaguely understands computers let alone actionscript and flash- I could not survive without kirupa- it is my University -that and just determination- I feel like I need my Mickey Mouse badge when it takes me more than 2 whole months of sweating work. I need a pat on the back occasionally if only for the people who taught me to say “hey look what we did for that person”. nuff said
Having the pop-up tutorial in kirupa.com doesn’t mean its the approach of everyone (or the mods as you claim in your post).
Personally, I don’t favour pop-ups much but wouldn’t ever disapprove nor refuse to have it in the set of tutorials for the sake of learning…
Now back to topic, I don’t give SOTW feedbacks myself, but I, or rather, all of us follow a criteria of judging (ranging from usability to the functionality of the website etc.)
Anyhow, be assured that the judging is fair. I know the feedback is important, but we have our own commitments and we try to do our best…
