Photoshop Images

I’m a complete newbie to Photoshop, I’ve been working with Illustrator for a while now but up until now had never spent much time in Photoshop.

Well now I’ve been using Photoshop lately to design images because I just love what you can do to images especially when designing for the web. That’s my problem though.

Warning
Newbie question ahead!

When I make buttons in Photshop as anything but an image that fills the entire dimentions that I set, when I save the image for web or just use it in a different program IE. Buttons for Flash, I get the image as the size of whatever the dimentions were in Photoshop. Now I understand that I can just change the dimentions of the document to fit the exact size that I want the button to be.

But what about any button or image for that matter that I want to use that isn’t a square like a round button.

How do I JUST get the round image and not the entire square document?

If I’m understanding your correctly, it sounds like you’re trying to achieve a transparency around your button. Let say you’ve made a round button in photoshop, to get the round appearance, you would have to have two layers. The 1st layer would be your round button and the 2nd layout below would be blank, no color fill. So what you should have now is a round button surrounded by the grey and white checker board background which represents an transparent area. Now click on file, then save for web and over to your right there should be a drop down menu. Save your image as either a gif or png, those formats would maintain your image’s transparency. Hope that helps. =)

Ahh ok, thanks.

I guess your reply just clarified my own question for me even better. Is it possible to have a transparency around a round object that is a JPG?

Is there anyway to do this?

JPGs doesn’t support transparency, you’re going to have to go with either GIF or PNG.
