Picasso.. Overated Or not?

Well,
I have been around ALOT of artist in my time so far…
Growing up, with both parents painters, I was in the artistic community for a while. Even my first job involved, inventory for a Artist Union.

And one thing they all agree on: Picasso was over-rated. He was a self centered, egoistic artist. Everyone knew he could paint, and was good at it. But the art after the blue period and beyond… seems just like an insult. It seems he is saying (and he did several times) I am famous, you will buy what I paint. And he just got bored and didnt care. But today, alot of people claim that that is true creativity and true expression, even though it is crudley drawn at best. And many artist consider his art an ego trip,
what do you think?

My friend,
art and the artist are two different things.

Picasso had a different style which he gerenally used. To many people he was the greatest, and to others, he was overrated. In the end all that matters is the art.

Maybe we only like 2 pieces out of 30 by picasso…so he is not as important as the art.

Maybe i am babbling on and should go to bed :*(

yeah stop chin waggin…j/k…I think Picaso was phenominal…I think he was losing his mind toward the end tho.

Picasso is NOT overated, his work has been very influentual and people still use his work as reference for modern graphic design.

It’s true that he had a few screws loose, but many artists are like that though, they have issues and are very wierd.

RB:

I look at it this way. To some people, Jerry Garcia is a Guitar God. To some people, everything Jerry did after his incident in 1978 was monitarily motivated guano.

Personally, I fit in the middle somewhere.

Rev

hahahahahaha…guano…hahahahahahaha

Guano I tell you!

nothing but GUANO!

:beam:

Rev

hahahahha…I am going to watch that now…just because you keep saying guano.

I find he was a bit overrated, I mean alot of people refer to him as very good, based on the sole fact that other people think he is good…

I think his art had ALOT of junk in it, and he knew he could sell it. It seems to me he got bored, and just started drawing lots of diffrent stuff he didnt try before.

Picasso could actually paint and draw very well (in the beginning=))- but as EG pointed people liked him because he was a great innovator too. and out of his 20000 or so works he’s probably done a few good things to please everyone…

he was the first to experiment cubism - some love it other loathe it but he was definitely the one who did it first (influenced by Paul Cezanne - an impressionist - worked a lot with volumes)

i don’t appreciate much of his work either but he was an important artist, and creative one…

Mlk, agreed.

a lot of people refer to him as very good, based on the sole fact that other people think he is good…

aah, the basis of 99.9% of art, fashion, design, etc…

I dont think it would be wise, or fair for that matter to collect a consensus about one artist and his work, and stick to that decision. Art is not made for that - it is a limb connected to the artist full of emotions and thought. It just would not be fair to anyone to decide wether or not he/his work is overrated or not.
