Polish can hide a lack of momentum

I keep running into products that look finished in all the right ways, but somehow nothing is actually moving underneath. The interface gets nicer every week while the underlying workflow still feels stuck.

Feels like teams can spend months sanding the surface because it’s measurable and visible, while the harder product questions keep getting deferred. Has anyone else seen polish become a substitute for shipping real momentum?

I’ve seen this a lot in migrations: “polish” is the only safe lever because it doesn’t force decisions about ownership, data, or edge cases, so it becomes a weekly progress theatre. The tell for me is whether anyone can name the next user-facing capability in plain language (not “improve UX”) and what has to change underneath to make it real.
