Processor Speed Question

Well, if some of you remember my old thread, I ordered a new computer a while back and got it all set up yesterday. I haven’t really noticed THAT big of a difference in my application’s speed, and that possibly could be due to more hd space, or a less fragmented hd.

I was wondering, how much faster is a P4 HT 3.4 GHz Processor than a regular 1.8 GHz processor? I mean how much difference in startup speed will I experience with a program say…photoshop? I timed them both and it seems it takes about 13 seconds to start it up to the point where it’s usuable on my new computer, and 18 on my old.

Both computers have 1 GB of RAM, but the new one has a SATA HD instead of a standard IDE ATA.

Can you tell us the buffer of your new and old HDD? That counts alot, even more than the RPM!

I’m pretty sure they’re both 8mb.

You should be able to notice a difference…but it’s not going to be like the difference in night and day. A 1.8 ghz processor (I’m assuming P4 with 400 mhz front side bus?) is by no means slow.

Give it a few more days and you may discover your new machine is faster than you think. If it still doesn’t seem fast enough you could try returning it and waiting 1-2 years to get a new one???

Run some PC benchmark tests on both and you’ll see the difference.

I’ve heard benchmarking programs aren’t really good for the chip.

That’s BS. That’s like saying playing graphics-intensive games is bad for the chip.

Okay, thanks. What’s the best benchmarking software?

Well, there are a lot of good ones.

3Dmark '04 is the way to go for Games benchmarking.

And
and
There are a LOT.

At this point in time, we are really still waiting for the rest of the computer to catch up tot he CPU.

you know this already im sure, but i will say it anyway. You can have a super mega CPU but if the rest of the computer isnt as fast, you wont really notice it.

1.8 is a mega processer (i have a 1.6 PC and a 1.33 for my mac), and its still super fast. Wtih a gig of ram i think the only thing left would be your HDD not being as fast? But that might not be it at all. You might want to wait a little bit more when you start to use things like 3ds or other programs that would normaly lag your system a bit.

Really, if you think benchmarking is ‘bad’ for your computer, so is it leaving it on, like, right now, as you’re reading this, your computer is dying, slowly, now.
