PS2 Controller Busted?

Alright guys, I’m looking for some tips on fixing a PS2 Controller. Here’s the background:

I bought 2 sony controllers with my ps2 years ago and they’ve been working great. However, in the last 6-months i haven’t played any 2-player games, which has led to the second controller being wrapped up and sitting next to my ps2. I got Fight Night Round 3 the other day, plugged in my other controller to play with a buddy, and now Up on the D-Pad and L1 do not work. I tried switching the port, but the same controller continued to have the problem, which rules out the ps2 being the cause.

So, I opened up the controller thinking some of the contacts (or whatever they’re called) were either misaligned or that some dirt had gotten in. This was not the case.

Now this might be confusing, but hopefully u can follow. I could get the other directions on the D-PAD to work while the controller was open and plugged in by pressing the rubber to the contact, however up would not work. Feeling defeated, I put it back together and left it plugged in.

After playing for a while, I noticed the menus in fight night started to scroll up thru the options on their own. This is because you can use both controllers to manipulate the menus, so the broken controller was now scrolling UP…

I’m wondering if you guys have any tips or links to fixing this. I don’t want to shell out the cash, so none of this “buy a new one” stuff. It seems the circuit “board” is still intact, so I think there may be a way to fix it.

Thanks in advance!

you need to repair it, seriously. Maybe find the nearest sony service center…i dunno anything which could be done. fixing it yourself might just void the warranty

good luck

Openning it up probably did that…

They are cheap as dirt on ebay my man.

Your probably better off fishing for a deal there than trying to send it out to be fixed. Most likely cheaper and quicker.

Thanks for the responses guys.

It’s definitely past the warranty at 3+ years old. haha. which is why i decided to open and try myself… nothing to lose really.

Ebay does have some cheap ones, but shipping to Canada seems to be consistently around $25USD, which is pretty much the price of a new controller here at an EBgames.

I definitely will not send it off for repair because I doubt they’ll charge less than $20 for an hour of labour, plus shipping, I was really hoping to be able to do this myself.

Still looking for if anyone has any experience fixing these? I have found some links to people fixing their own disk read errors, and I have done this myself previously on a couple PS2s, so I was hoping there would be something similar for controllers, like a “shop manual”? lol

I have to fix my “disc read error” problem once every couple of months. I have the very first version (from a preorder in 2000) its so sensitive to dust I constantly need to open it up and clean the laser head myself.

Well good luck in your controller hunt.

Thanks fester. I think I may go the ebay route if my next attempt to open up the controller doesnt fix it. I’m hoping to do a local pickup… I could do the KW area in or GTA in Ontario… so it might work out well.

Does anyone have any experience with this controller?

It looks exactly like the SONY controller, but is 3rd party. I want to buy one that wont go bad this time. I’ve always thought the sony brand ones were the best, but it seems they arent the greatest, or maybe it’s just my bad luck.

I’d go with sony brand myself. I am the same way, always buy brand name controllers. The problem I would think is where the cord comes out of the controller. It might be broken there because it makes a sharp angle if its wrapped up, see if you can cut it down a little bit and re-attach the connections if you up for all that soldering. Good luck
