My computer (winXP Home) uses 350 MB of RAM while idling, is that normal? The only programs open are my RAM manager, AIM, and MSN Messenger
(I have 1024 MB total)
Does windows use a % of your RAM? Like if you have more, does it use more?

I don’t think that’s normal Yeldarb although I don’t know much about processes. I use xp aswell and mine is 20k
EDIT: oops! actually I’m using 229MB with norton antivirus, messenger, zone alarm and internet explorer running.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t windows scale how much ram it will use based on how much you have?
I’m using around 179 mb right now, just surfing the internet with my antivirus and msn messenger running (I have 512 mb of ram total). You’re using roughly twice as much and you have twice as much ram.
I’m pretty sure windows just uses a certain percentage of your total ram as a cache. So if you open up something that you’ve already had open, it will load faster. I could be totally wrong though.

Windows, (unless tweeked) runs a whole bunch of useless services when you boot it up. Cleaning up those services would free up a lot of RAM. I will look when I get home to see how much RAM my home systems use when they idle. My work PCs are not a good benchmark, because I know how much junk runs in the backround. =)
Cheers!

I have already disabled all the “junk” that I can. It still takes up a ton of RAM, not that it’s a big deal or anything lol, i was just wondering.
