“Web Designer. These days so-called web designers are a
dime a dozen. As the most replacable unimportant person
in the company, expect long hours and low pay. Flash,
Dreamweaver, PhotoShop knowledge required. Don’t worry,
you can pick up the skills for this position in about a
weekend. Salary DOE ($15k-18k).”
What a bunch of dicks. E-mails will be sent. Why do people think they can treat us like crap:(
I thought for sure this was a joke. Who do they think makes there company. If they don’t have any web desingers they don’t have any product for the client. If I worked there I would walk out and see how far they get
well one thing, graphic desgin IS getting easyer b/c of tools, but still that is just plain,UGHH! that pisses me off. I am 13 and know that it is not easy at all, these dicks think it is?! well then why dont they do it?

I dont agree with this. Sure it’s getting easier to achieve the effects that you want because of the programs but that doesnt mean it will look good. You have to learn how to design, how to make things look good. Anyone can pick up photoshop and learn the filters and make lightning bolts and grass and so forth, but if it doesnt look good - then why do it.
Designing is a talent, you either have it or you try and learn it. I went to school for 3 years for graphic design and let me tell you - some people just couldnt get it. Sure they knew how to use programs and such but the overall look was terrible.
I get pissed when I read stuff like this - some people have no idea…
Frankly, Web <B>Design</B> is not that simple. Sure there are a lot of people that can build sites, but about 1/4 of those people can actually design and build a functional… nice site.
And as Sure Shot said, sure Photoshop has gotten easier, but if you can’t do anything but crappy tacky effects with filters, then you are stupid and shouldn’t design (unless you practice and learn to do more than just filter…filter…filter).
true that you do need talent and an eye, but look at me, i am 13 w/ a crack of PS and FMX and i can atcheve some pretty cool stuff. but still this is after literally HUNDREDS of hours so just PS alone then FMX alone. so it is true that its not that easy, but if you are just going for some crappy piece then it is easy. but otherwise it is hard work and dentermiation.
man i sound really hypocritcal! but it can be won both ways, but untill those guys get behind PS and do it themselves as good as lost for example, they cant say smack!
It is all about creativity. If you have none u got nothing. I have a couple of friends that think they are wizards because they can do a motion tween. The ycouldn’t design there way out of a wet paper bag. Not that I’m some creative god but these guys suck.
These guys are out of New Orleans? no wonder they don’t pay… I love NOLA as much as the next guy, but it is dirt cheap to live in the area…
They will get what they pay for. I have a friend in the Tampa area who doesn’t pay his web designers anything! He uses high school and design school interns, and just keeps rotating them. Personally I think that stinks, but then again as he says, I am giving them experience, and the market is flooded with applicants.
I don’t think sending an email of any kind will do anything but release your rage. It will have little effect on them… =)
If it isn’t a hoax, then they will get the “weekend taught” web designers they pay for…
My friend in Tampa runs a web dev company, and pays his designers very little. They publish crap, but his clients pay for it ($200-500/site). They even say they are experienced in Flash! I won’t talk to him about web stuff anymore, I just end up giving away my knowledge and experience and gain nothing but a headache in return.
I won’t say it to him, but I kinda think of it as “virtual pimping.”
Boy do I know what you mean. I know this one dude who knows nothing about web design, and he is always asking how to do this, how to do that, but when I tell him, he doesn’t understand a word I say. And when I tell him to put certain code between the head tags he asks me what the head tags are! GRRRR, I just avoid his questions now… or I send him links to sites to learn HTML…HAHA.
i’m sure it’s a joke. i think the message is, “we are not hiring web designers”.
the dime a dozen part has some truth to it. during the big boom of the late 90’s everyone became a “web designer”. you didn’t have to know a thing.
my first flash job was just like that. my friend played around with flash for a couple of weeks then went to this company and said he was like the world expert. they paid him $100 an hour to do a site, on his word alone. he called me in to help. i knew less about flash than him at the time, and i was getting $100 an hour.
anyway, the point is, there were thousands of guys like us, but in real full time jobs. then it crashed. then there were thousands of guys who called themselves web designers who really weren’t that good.
