you guys are totally right- i can hardly believe that’s a real job ad- they must not be too serious about getting someone, nor be very professional themselves.
what completely ticks me off (while remaining relevant) — and i hope not to piss anybody off here— but i find those “offshore” companies (are they on an oil rig or what?!!) who can spit out sites for $50 completely aggravating!!! ---- i get the impression that the cost of living is low over there and they’ve got lots of smart kids in school (maybe on scholarships?) and so some of these companies can afford to hire them CHEAP and put out pretty decent work - but then everybody starts to expect all designers to do the same, and it ain’t gonna happen!
— sidenote: i just had it out with a clt today and i went to his site to make sure i didn’t leave any files there bc i don’t think we’re on speaking terms anymore – and he’s one of those “i want 30 flashing email icons on my index page!” i’ve steered him away from that and he doesn’t appreciate it at all. oh well
and i think the software is easier but more complex- so if you want to be a beginner, maybe that’s great, but for doing really intense work, it’s just as hard as it ever was, bc there’s a lot more functionality to the apps nowadays… (just my 2¢) ~~lmao @ frontpage and the neighbor’s husband’s 3rd cousin’s mailman!!! too true
btw: anybody got any extra freelance design work? blinks eyelashes fiercely:beam:
— ok now i am REALLY going to drink a beer - hey! i’m missing the simpsons!
I have found that the more tools out there and the easier they make it to make websites it kinda makes it better for us. Let me explain. The more people who get frontpage sites out there make our superior designs seem just that much more better. I have had several re-designs requested because someone let their Sister’s husband half cousin who they heard does sites do their website. And it came out crappy. It is a specialized trait. Anyone can buy wrenches and that does not put any mechanic shop in danger. It lends to the perils of doing it yourself. You have to have a real passion to do what we do or you wont do it well. I have been lucky to land the job I have. I have recently decided to do freelance work and have been hit with a landslide of projects. I have really supplemented my income. By continuing to raise the bar with our designs there will alway be jobs and contracts to be had. And yes it is competitive. Kepp your quality high and your overhead low and you will be alright. But the way the industry is going you will do yourself some good to learn a few programming languages.
One more thing the best advertising tool is word of mouth. Keep the customers happy and they will speak for you. I have not even completed my site and I have been overrun with stuff.
Wow this is such an old thread. What is funny is in my previous post I mentioned a friend with no experiance who got a web design job. He quit his regular job to do it. THe company went under last month. Did i laugh my @ss off when i heard that. :beam:
