Real assistants have to survive the rest of the workflow

sci-fi assistants always look like they live in a clean little bubble. real tools have to deal with auth, permissions, half-broken data, and the fact that nobody wants to rebuild their whole process around one clever feature.

that gap is what makes them feel disappointing to people, i think. is the problem the AI itself, or that we keep asking it to fit into systems that were already kind of a mess?

In real orgs, “who’s allowed to do what” becomes 80% of the assistant, and it’s the least glamorous 80%. The model can draft the email; the hard part is proving it’s allowed to see the thread, pull the right doc, and not leak the one spreadsheet that’s been “temporary” since 2019.

That “auth, permissions” bit is where most assistants faceplant.
