Recommend a Portable Music Player

Well after picking up the iRiver and giving it a go for a few days, I must say it’s awesome and I really would like to buy it …

however, after testing it for a few days and reading about the release of the samsung yp-u2x, I’ve also realized that if I’m going to get a portable music player, I want it just to play music. I don’t want to pay extra for video or photo display.

So seeing how there have been requests for recommendations around here lately… I would like to ask for recommendations for a portable music player.
I’ve tried doing my own research but to no avail, but still am carrying out research.

Anyway, I’m looking for a pmp that (in order of priority)

  • fits in your pocket (preferably smaller than an ipod nano)
  • plays music with good quality
  • FM Radio is not a must, but it would be a plus
  • does not force me to use a certain software to download my music
  • reasonably cheap
  • 1-2GB storage would be good
  • reliable and won’t crap out within a year
  • has wide range of format support
  • is not an iPod (iPods don’t fit most of the above criteria)

I’ve also considered the MobiBlu cube thing, but that’s way too small. I don’t see how it’s controls can be used easily.

right then, thanks in advance!

my friend has one they are pretty strong and really small… screens pretty good. good battery power. and its not an IPOD.

This is basically all i could find and it works really nice (its far smaller than it looks btw). AND BEST OF ALL ITS HAS FM RADIO!

hey thanks, that does look like a good candidate.

do you know if I have to use a certain program? or could I just drag and drop stuff into it?

also, it doesn’t seem to have OGG support… but I don’t have any OGG files so heh.

and iriver ones?
they are really awesome!

you mean the T-series? they seem kinda pricey… but sure, I’ll consider it if you recommend it (prefer an exact model please)

edit: they also require I use their software. pfft.

I think a creative zen micro would do you good…

a little too expensive as I don’t need 4GB (the max I’ll ever need is 2GB), but thanks for pointing it out, I’ll take a look at it if I can’t find something better.

I was like that but then I thought I’d need more so I got an 8g and its helped alot to back up some important files when my compy decided it would break

Totally agree: a creative zen is the one i have and i love it.
That is my recomendation nothing more to say. (lol)

Get a 1GB iRiver T30. I have a 512MB T30 and it’s awesome. The first thing you notice about it is how everything it has is built with quality in mind. It’s light, sturdy, the fabrication is high quality, the menus are great, the battery life is really long and the sound definition is just awesome.

I’ll think again about the fact that I won’t need more than 2gb.

The problem with iRivers is that they are a tad pricey, and they require proprietary software, I believe.

Mik3, are those out yet? Anyway, I don’t really like those as they are way too small. Hard to use the navigation buttons blindly.

Why does everyone obsess over FM radios? Wtf is the point, I never listen to the radio unless i’m in the car, i’v got one on my phone and have only used it like twice.

Never used an iRiver, apparently they are sweet tho.

I’m not obsessed over FM radio, but I currently do not have any radio. neither do I have a TV, and as such it would be good if I had something to tune into when the tornado warning sirens go off (they’ve gone off twice over the past year).

basically, it helps with those emergency situations, cos you never know… so it would be good if the player came with one.
Again, I am not stressing that I want one. I would like it if it cost $5 more, but I wouldn’t like it if it cost $50 more.

Anyway.

The folks over at dapreview have recommended me the Cowon G3. Anyone have any experience with this?

[ot]^Just hook your tv cable into the back of your computer then you never have to move.[/ot]

um, didn’t he just say he doesn’t have a tv?

[ot]… i ment so he could use like the corner of his monitor for his TV.
Or did he mean he really doesnt have TV cords. If he did then nvm.[/ot]

I didn’t mean you personally, I ment that i’v found that in general, people seem to pick an mp3 player that has an FM radio in it over one that dosen’t…

Tornado sirens eh, don’t have them here (odviously). But yea, experts say that if there’s some big disaster or emergency, one of the essential pieces of equipment to have is an FM radio.

and duct tape

[ot]you can’t hook your computer up for tv unless you have a tv tuner. which I don’t :-/
Butters, sorry for having taken it the wrong way.[/ot]
