Riddle!

Okay, a friend of mine recently asked me this riddle. I had not heard this before and felt that it really had a clever answer. Those who heard this before please let this pass and give the others a chance to take a guess…alrite…?

Ok, here is the situation:

A thief, after his death is summoned before God. God reviews his life and decides that he should go to hell. The thief begs for mercy stating that he is not completely responsible for his wayward life. God thinks for a moment and says that he would give a 50-50 chance for the thief !

" Follow that passage. At the end of it you will find 2 doors. Behind one lies heaven and behind the other lies hell. If you are lucky you will find the right door"

The thief thinks that this certainly beats being sent directly to hell and moves on to the passage. Just when he had taken a few steps God calls him again.

“Allright, let us make it a little more interesting: I will place a man in front of each door. One of them speaks the truth and nothing but the truth. But the other one is on a curse and can never say anything truthful. You will have no knowledge as to who speaks the truth. Both of them are aware of where heaven and hell is. I give you permission to ask any one of them your way. But remember this : You can but ask only ONE question. There will be no second chances. You may go now…”

The thief contemplates his position as he walks down the passage. He sees no reason to believe that the situation has improved from the last set of odds given to him. As he reaches the doors, sure enough, he finds the two men. There is no way he can tell which one of them would speak the truth. And he can ask only a single question. Suddenly it hits him! He realises that God has infact not given him a 50-50! He realises that god has literally shown him the way! He asks a question to one of the men. The man points him to one of the doors and the thief opens it and goes to heaven!

Now the question : What question did the thief ask ?
