In the news these days, the certain bits that capture my attention are the ones that involve piracy, RIAA, MPAA, Kazaa, etc. Why? Because of this realization:
By these harmful acts of “stealing” from artists and movie producers, we are in a sense controlling the decisions that organizations like the RIAA and MPAA are making to our favor.
Take this for example:

Towards the bottom, you’ll read that because of the rise in movie piracy alongside music piracy, some movie companies are decreasing the time between a theater movie release and the DVD release of that movie. Think that’s not good enough? The movie industry is also pushing to lower their prices on DVDs and others (VHS, etc). This is very good news for most of us because 1) an earlier DVD release of a certain movie will lessen your desire to download the movie, only if 2) you choose to buy/rent your movies, which will most likely see a drop in prices in the next couple months.
This isn’t the case solely for movies. Some record companies have started dropping their CD prices, though not seemingly significant, it is a change that will see effect in the future.
Optimism
With the recent attempt to combat music piracy, like iTunes, Bastille-like CDs, and WMAs as long as the movement of being able to freely download music progresses, so does the movement to stop it. As time goes on, I am hoping that these companies will continue to provide positive incentives for people to go out and buy their CDs or movies.
What are your feelings on this?
