Section Reorganizations

Hey everyone,
I’m wondering if the following section modifications are feasible:

  1. Create a new section called “PHP and XML” where all of the current topics related to PHP and XML will go. All of the Flash/PHP and Flash/XML tutorials can go there also. Currently the Flash-PHP/XML tutorials are in the AS section. PHP/XML tutorials are in Web Technologies.

  2. Move ActionScript tutorials that have a larger practical use to either Flash MX or Flash MX 2004. For example, Random Motion is a special effect that could in Flash MX 2004 - not necessarily in the AS section. AS will be home to primarily AS only topics such as ASBroadcaster, Loading External Movie, If/Else, etc.

Do the above seem like something that would better help organize the tutorials on the site? I’m planning on writing a few more PHP tutorials, so we should have a good assortment of tutorials for beginners and advanced users when it comes to PHP.

Thanks!
Kirupa :cons:

whats going to happen to after effects, maybe we should create a motion graphics section? put After effects, premier, photoshop + flash stuff.

i see you put it in the web tricks section–it dosent really fit there.

I agree that it doesn’t fit there. I am not sure where else it can be placed. The problem is that we only have PS tutorials when it comes to graphics. If we were to have several Premier or AE tutorials, it would be possible to rename the PS section to Motion/Graphics.

Do you think it is feasible to rename the PS section to Motion Graphics or add a section called Motion Graphics for one tutorial?

:rabbit:

Eilsoe and i talked about ae tutorials ages ago, so i will see what i can do, based on the popularity of the ae tutorial up now, i think some more are needed, leave it to me and ill chat to Eilsoe and see what we can do. atm big tutorials seem out of my reach, i might just throw up quick trick kinda things… anyway… all is undecided…get back to ya.

I think Photoshop is large enough to have its own section, after effects usually comes in after photoshop or other applications as a effect compositor. I would think a new section called Motion Graphics would be feasible if we can just get some more people working on premier/aftereffects/combustion/ final cut pro tutorials. if you think about it, my tutorial can be cut up into 3 tutorials, 1 is intro, 2 is animation, 3 is special effects (filter), but for the future lets say a tutorial…eg … 1: filter 2:recompositing 3: adding vector elements 4: exporting to flash 5: introducion to 3d in ae , 6: Camera, lights, action in AE, 7:particle fun! ect…

the only thing is that i would find it impossible to make tutorials for all these to the depth and extent i had done my first, so would anyone be interested in starting a trend?

Tutorials don’t have to cover complicated topics all the time, nor do they have to be as detailed as what you have created. Usually, as long as whatever effect or technique the tutorial is trying to cover is explained well, I add it to the site. Even simple concepts that are explained properly get added.

I wish I could help write tutorials for AE/Premier, but I have never used those two programs :frowning:

yeah i know, thats just me i like to explain things in detail… hehe… it saves headaches after because every angle is covered and even the beginner can understand. i guess with that tutorial out of the way i wouldnt need to go in depth again just with the knowleage they checked out that tutorial so they should know the basics.

Im with .soulty on the Motion Graphics section - I know morse has done some cool stuff in AE and would most likely write a tut on it and there are a few other members that are starting with AE that could either write or use a Motion Graphics section - and once i get my hands on Motion I could write some tutes on that too.

I just got an idea - why not have Motion Graphics be “Post production” or something like that. Then say Final Cut, Motion, AE, all of the post production apps could fit into there.

The Photoshop section seems to be doing well but i was wondering if maybe we could change that to just “Graphics” that way we could include Fireworks tutorials in there too. I know i would love to write some Fireworks tutorials and i know that a few users swear by it and we could probably get them to write some too.

Just my $0.02.

yep mike, nice ideas, i agree with “Graphics” with a little description like "photoshop, fireworks, illustrator, draw etc…)

Not sure about post production, well its right technically but i wonder if people will be confused with that post production is. Motion graphics seems more of a easy term to acknowledge, and i dont see why final cut wouldnt fit in there, not sure, you think it will be alright?

Well as far as i have seen Final Cut is a lot like Premeir, where is for a lot of editing and setting up, then you import it into Motion (Apple’s version of AE) and add your effects and whatnot. So if you look at it like that then you can see why its not really motion graphics - that gets into more of the production and thinks like that.

I think Motion Graphics is a fitting title - but at the same time if you start to look at the sister apps to AE and Motion you can get into a whole nother ball park.

Sounds good mike. If I can get a few FW tutorials, I will definitely rename PhotoShop to Graphics and add FW tutorials there once you or others write them. I may abe able to help write a few FW tutorials after I’m done with my PHP’ing

A general section on motion graphics or video can include AE, Final Cut, whatever. As long as it is related to motion graphics, it can go there

agree kirupa :thumb:

and i totally know what you mean mike, but we do need to simplify it or it can be huge with the amount of sub title categories. Like Kman said anything related to motion graphics in “motion graphics”

Sounds good kirupa and .soulty - I just didnt want to limit the section to one thing if it can be more, but if we can throw Final Cut or Premeir in there - I think Motion Graphics is the way to go.

I will do some FW tutorials right now and then get them to you (I still have to finish that Relections tutorial in Photoshop too hehe).

Within a large section, I can subdivide it into various program categories similar to what has been done such as with the PHP/XML section.

aight mike, you wanna contact morse? or what u think make a sticky in drawing/design relating tutorials for motion graphics needed!?

I will contact Morse and th3t3rminator for Motion Graphics and Frieworks (respectively).

ok, as i will contact Eilsoe (ae)

I sent an e-mail to t3h t3rminator (Mike) and I will talk to Morse next time i see him on AIM

PM’ed Eilsoe (waiting on response)

BodyVisual (another AE user) said he could write a tutorial on Trap Code and Trap Code Plugins (whatever that means).

I can let him know or you can talk to him on AIM (mjg9009) if you want him to write it. Thats about all the AE users that i know at the moment.

I know DDD and Rev like Fireworks a lot so if they think they can find some time (i know both of them have hecktic scheduals (sp?)) that might do some good in getting some more Fireworks tutorials.

I will do one on the aqua-tabs since it took me forever to figure it out and as far as i could find there really arent all that good of tutorials out there for it. I think that if we have a good ammount of high quality tutorials Kirupa.com can be for graphics what it is for Flash - something that would really start out to make us the “full media community” that i have heard being passed around over the last 2 years.
