Site Of The Week (July 26 - August 1)

Apologies for the lateness of this one. I haven’t been around much over the weekend, so SotW has slipped back a few days. :frowning:

I’ve altered the rules slightly so that they now read “sites with 60% Flash” instead of the original 90%, so we should get a broader selection of sites.

Also, dumb blonde that I am, I realised that these polls are supposed to close on Tuesday, so from now on I’d like to get back into that. This means that not only am I going to have to get my act together, but that we’re all going to have to vote by then.

I know this week is going to be awkward, and that’s completely my fault. Sorry again.

I really wanted to like Ombilicus ( http://www.magouilleurs.net/ ) more… but the lizard was awful and some of the other graphics were too inconsistent to hold up against what else was up there.

That left me with Missweblash and Flashlevel. I decided to go with Missweblash since it was fun less typical of all the fancy-pancy designed sites which Flashlevel pretty much embodies, though nicely with some decent effects and transitions (I didnt like the button handling though - you had to wait to use/see them).

Ribaudequin: Threw up two advert pop ups straight away, which was annoying. The animation on the splash was a little choppy too. Inside though, I like the simplicity of the site and how it looks. The transitions between sections are nicely done, though there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of content yet - I’d like to see more.

MissWeblash: Whoa, very bright. I’m not a fan of mouse trailers and think it’s a bit unneccessary, but I have to say that this one is well done and looks good. I like the artwork that’s gone on here, and the nav is easy to use. Very nice site indeed.

Flashlevel: Quite a dark looking site, but impressive nonetheless. Some well planned images, and subtle Flahs effects rather than ‘in your face’. The text is a little difficult to read sometimes, it could do with being a little brighter so it stands out more.

Commander Cool: Well, definitely interesting. I wondered at first what was going on, since there was just an image on screen for a while and no sign of any content (I liked the picture though). When it does all load though, I have to say I really liked the way this site worked. The only thing that was kind of disappointing was that the background became grey and kind of dull. It’s well laid out though, and the menu works nicely.

Gbay: The first thing I noticed about this site was the navigation. Why on earth do you have to hold the spacebar down o see your nav? It makes it kind of awkward to use, in all honesty… There’s some good Flash work on here though, moving between the sections is very smooth.

Ombilicus: I liked the splash here, it looks very atmospheric, though I’m afraid I can’t understand a freaking word of it. My bad. Beautiful opening sequence though, and lovely images. I loved looking at this, and the style of the palm trees. The postcard email was a great touch too. The only thing I didn’t like was the lizard. Compared to how good everything else looks, that thing doesn’t fit in.

Itworks: Nicely done, everything works seamlessly here. The colour scheme is nice and soothing too. I had a few problems, though that was due mainly to not understanding the language. My biggest criticism would be that the little close / back to home button isn’t noticable enough, even though it’s flashing.

Bojan: A lot of little timers down there. Well coded, but are they really needed? I liked the photo galleries, they worked well, though I would have reversed the effect you have on them, so they’re faded until you rollover, then it brightens. That’s just me though. Layout was good - clean and simple - but not exactly outstanding.

Gr0m: Wouldn’t load for me.

Mr Mass: Looks very impressive, there’s some good artistic work here. The preloaders are nice, though I’m not sure about the big splash of red during loading, that stands out as not quite fitting in somehow. A bit inconsistant though, as different areas had different types of button and rollover.

you’re doing good with this kit. keep it up!

I’ve had such a freaking manic week, I’m totally disorganised. :sure: That’s why this SotW is so hurried… I’m only at work till Wednesday this week, so I’ve had to get everything finished before then and this just slipped my mind. Bad Kit.

it happens

Hey I am actually here for this this week =)

I will be posted critiques and stuff later

Ribaudequin - Anything that gators me is automatically skipped…j/k. Ok site, nothing I haven’t already seen before. Animations are ok as well

Missweblash - Nice layout. Very orange-y. Neat swift animations

Flashlevel - Nice overall. Menu’s cool, but strangely slows down my PC. Next…

Cmdr Cool - Nice art. Menu is a little CPU use-y (couldn’t find the right word).

Tell me about it. Absolute shocker of a day today. :sure: Definitely a case of Mushroom Management - keeping us all in the dark and every so often feeding us crap… :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks everyone who’s voted today, a massive 9 votes already. :beam: But a tie! Ack! Someone break it!

I really didn’t vote for Flashlevel on purpose, because I think that guy’s already got some recognition from other places. I thought it would be fair to give someone else a chance, so voted for Missweblash.

that FL site is very nice though.

yeah I avoided FL on purpose too, second site we’ve seen from him (them)… whatever

I voted Missy too a few hours ago

flashlevel didn’t win last weeks SOTW and I felt he deserved at least one award for his amazing sites, his new one submitted this week is my favorite of his and on the SOTW list. I really don’t think that the fact that he already ahs some major awards should exclude him from getting a legitamite voting poll, which I think this is not.

He used our SOTW system and submitted a site, he won, but after he won we took his site down off the page and took away his award because he didn’t have ‘90% Flash’. He submitted the exact same site after the rules were changed and then he doesn’t get voted SOTW. His new client site is even better than the last and much better than the MissWeblash site in my opinion.

Sorry if I sound like a jerk, but I think he wasn’t treated fairly. . . .

He got my vote, enough said, I just don’t have time to argue on the matter.

Ribaudequin: Not too fond of the advert pop-ups. The images on the splash page were low quality and jagged. Im not really sure how the rollover images in the navigation are useful or have a point, they are way off to the side and too small to even get what they are. That little yellow guy that popped in and out of the fun section was quite annoying/distracting and didn’t fit well with the site at all. Also the site has no visually defined boundaries, so the scrolling content seems like it is appearing and disappearing into thin air which looks weird to me.

Missweblash: Woah, that orange/yellow color scheme was quite hard on my eyes. I also found the pixel font used was too small to read comfortably. I wasn’t too fond of the sound effects on the orange buttons or that the navigation was a mysterymeat navigation (you hadd to rollOver the oranges to see what section it led to). In your play section I didn’t really understand what to do, but then I realized that some things happened behind the 4 big blocks that take up almost all the visual space. I must say, excellent vector work, but overall your site was too hard on my eyes.

Flashlevel: I like the layout, and the image transitions of the orange blur is very nicely done. However, perhaps it is just my monitor, but the color scheme is just way too dark. I found myself struggling to read the dark grey text on the black background and it took me a while to realize there was a scrollbar off to the side, I was trying for a bit to figure out how to scroll the text. As I said this might only be my monitor, but I don’t have another one to check it out on and I can only critique by what I see. From what I could see everything was nicely pulled off, but the dark color scheme knocks points off.

Commander Cool: Was it really neccessary to put this in a pop-up? Even the pop-up was too big for my monitor (1024x768), I don’t know what res you expect all your viewers to be having, but I think you are expecting too much. Your color scheme is quite dull, personally I like it though. I think your site is a nice simple site that pulls off what it needs to pull off without all the extra fancy jazz. I definitely liked the stuff in your portfolio as well (this is just a side comment)

Gbay: What was up with the holding shift for navigation? At least you gave instruction for that in the beginning, but the the instructions go away leaving people to think it might not be the same. The navigation structure is not very user friendly at all. Also the vector images of you (I assume you) are choppy and don’t fit in the site well, they stick out (not in a good way).

Ombilicus: Why the gigantic pop-up? I designer should always plan for at least 800x600, but when a site is too big for ever 1024x768 it gives the impression you have too high expectations for your viewers. Not everyone has top of the line big-screen television sized monitors. It wasn’t clear what items were actually meant to be used as the back button, it took me a while to figure out what to click in each section just to return back to the original navigation (a navigation should really always be present no matter what section you are in). That big lizard definitely didn’t fit in at all, it stuck out like a sore thumb. I liked the touch of going into the bar and coming out and having it be night time. The style overall I found unique and I liked it a lot, but the functionaly part just wasn’t there. Things made noise after rolling over them for pretty much no reason, and the back buttons weren’t clear at all, it could definitely use more work for functionality.

Itworks: Those sound effects were ear piercing, I didn’t really like them much. Your map thing in “Destaque” needs to be fixed, you can scroll it into nothingness just by repeatedly clicking in any direction. I also found your title area to be a bit unproffessional looking, there’s just something about it. Your transitions were nicely pulled off (except for the sound), and I liked your color scheme. For content I can’t really judge on that since I don’t speak the language.

Bojan: The main preloader has an error. It says “LOADING”, but then once it is fully loaded the word “LOADED” appears overlapping the “LOADING” causing some cluttering text action. I can’t really say I understand what is up with the music duration time, time started viewing, time spent viewing, etc, etc. It just seemed like space fillers that are more like “look what I can do” than actually serving any purpose. The swoop sound effect in the transitions was very “in your face”. The site is simple and clean, but nothing that isn’t seen on a daily (or hourly) basis in the Flash world.

Gr0m: For me this site kind of says “new 2A look with old 2A layout”. And going by your previous site version this is a common trend for you ( http://www.hot.ee/gr0m/v2003/index.htm versus http://www.skyworksinc.com/ )

Mr Mass: Whats up with the times new roman in the main preloader when you enter the site (via the enter button). I also have to ask… what’s up with the clicks? It seems they happen every 2 seconds for no reason. Also the girl speaking before each section seemed very pointless to me and didn’t fit the site at all especially when she literally screaming “wake up” (or something of that sort). Other than that, I thought the site contained a nice simple layout, and have very nice transitions.

I think that’s just about everyone, so Flashlevel has it this week.

Weee! It’s on time! :beam:

I’m just about to eat, but when I get back I’ll post results and crits.

See, a new, super organised Kit. Scary or what, huh?

oups, i didn’t read and voted, a bit late i admit…why was this not closed?
well, at least i don’t have to post critiques then…
just a _global.niceSites.this.week !!
