Spam, banners, pop-ups, etc

I was just thinking. Do the creators of spam actually think people are going to buy whatever product they’re displaying? I’ve seen the most ingenious banners where there’s a simple dialog box saying “YOUR COMPUTER IS RUNNING TOO SLOW” or “YOU ARE DISPLAYING YOUR COMPUTER IP ALL OVER THE INTERNET” and when you try to click on the X to close it, it brings you to the site anyway…only because the little x was part of the banner! I’m really tired of product spam, and i’m sure most of the world is too. I had to abandon my long-lived hotmail account because i’d get 50 msgs of spam a day. i created a new account and even that one is starting to get spam, slowly but surely.

So never give out your e-mail unless you positively trust the person/site you are giving it to. Once it falls in the wrong hands, your e-mail address will spread exponentially.

Or, you set up a junk mail address to fill in on sites. Works perfectly.

Doesn’t mean it’s not ennoying though.

I never have but I know people that have.

This is a multi million dollar industry and people acutally do buy this stuff… sad but true. It’s getting terrible that’s for sure - my hotmail account is usless. I hate it - thank god I pay for my ISP and have a pretty good one, although now I just recieved an email from somewhere and I have no idea how. I never use it anywhere…

Popups and spam emails are like those annoying 10-10-220 and 1-800 collect commercials because they make you pay attention, and remember their product.

usually i dont get that much spam email, just every once in a while. but i do have a popup blocker in my firewall, so that’s why popups never really bother me.

I’ve considered.

My hotmail doesn’t get spam at all really, if I do get any I block them straight away. Never just delete

  • Soul :s:

mmhhh - the more you ask them to unsubscribe for their list the more you get [naively] why ? [/naively] :trout:

oh well, and if you by mistake (uhhmmm) come across a p0rn site that’s it hit Ctrl-Alt-Del (a bunch of idiots bought some DNS that looked like www.homestarruner.com <-that one might be it…)
goddam it…

Funniest thing i heard the other day is AOL proposing to create software that will kill popups ads and spam - while they are the same people that send most of them… :trout:

what? spam? problems? no, we have no problems with spam

that’s crazy.

how much space are you allowed. my account at yahoo lets me have 4 mb, and 1000 emails would probably fill that up pretty fast.

hm, 10MB of storage

  • Anti-Spam Policy Mail.com has a strict policy against junk and unsolicited E-mail messages - often referred to as Spam. Because we block Spam, you will be protected from any unwanted E-mail.*

i maxed out hotmail’s anti-spam thing and started blocking all the addresses i didn’t want, but that didn’t help at all. those messages just kept coming. it sucks having hotmail’s 2mb limit. :-\

I can’t understand how marketing people for these two-bit companies actaully expect to sell anything using these types of adverts. on the whole, they’re gaudy, annoying and frankly unprofessional looking. not to mention half of them are webcam ads and 90% of those are incredibly suggestive lol! “ooh, look what you could if you had this webcam”

I have never considered buying anything from these ads: mostly because, they just horde your email address/steal your money then spam you some more. but also because I’m so quick to close them… I never get to see what they’re advertising

what you were saying about hotmail accounts: there’s a limit to the number of blocks you can apply anway. it’s strange. I use my email address allllllllll the time for all sorts of things… and I only get maybe 4-5 junk emails a day. I’ve been using this account for years and never really had a problem. previously, I had junk filter switched off, I’ve got it on again now, but regularly check through the Junk mail to make sure nothing important got caught. it is weird though, one of my friends gets roughly 200 junk emails a day to her hotmail account! but she’s a ***** and I really don’t like her any more… so… LOL! :thumb:

I don’t even look at them to see what’s it advertising! My brain just automaticly moves the cursor over to the X and clicks! And it can do it a million times if any other popups pop up!

lol at the pic Lynx! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve got a pop up killer on all my PCs now, they just irritate the hell out of me. I can turn it off should I need to, but most of the time that thing stays on.

But it’s the email that really annoys me. I’ve got my Hotmail block list filled up, plus the highest anti-spam filter but every day I still get a good 30 - 40 emails offering to clear debts, give me a diploma / mortgage / credit card or add several inches to various body parts, not all of which I possess.

lol…thats good hun

We dont need any transexual brits running around kirupa

what I want to know is… how do they know I’ve got a sma…

…ll-minded two-bit education… they’re constantly offering me diplomas fgs!

Wow I clear a good 250 messages a day out from my yahoo account. I find the filter pretty usefull it sends most of the spam to the bulk folder, and I just delete them all at once. =)

Cheers!
