The new world trade center

saw a program on tv last night about the controversy surronding the new world trade center.

for those who haven’t seen it, here it is --link–

apparently the money men have begun tweaking the design, complaining they won’t make enough money from the project and (of course) the govenor has also had reservations about the design and when this happens, the whole thing kind of hits snags.

Also some american architects have used this as a chance to personally attack the designer (Daniel Libeskind) and some of these architects/designers have the govenors attention.

just curious what you thought about the whole thing :h:

look at the controversy surrounding the diana memorial in hyde park…

i was there when it opened, only cos i work round corner, and it looks great. the amount of scandal and press coverage and general bashing it got was unbelievable

so given its ground zero, id be amazed if things like you describe werent happening

ehmmm…ok

I think the Diana tribute is a nice design however I’m fed up hearing Diana’s name to be honest. She’s still the most talked about Royal and she’s been dead for 10 years (I think). Let the poor woman rest in peace for gawds sakes.

but I actually meant the world trade centre and what people thought would be a fitting tribute, what they thought of the new design, businessmans demands for the site, a foreign designer…should it have been a yank?

what do you think?

I think the proposed design looks nice. I don’t mind that the design isn’t from an American. Lots of designers submitted their plans for what the best WTC building should lool like, and this one came out on top. I would put merit first and nationality somewhere in the back when deciding on a great design for a highly visible building

I think the new one is awesome! Because its not from an American doesnt make it any less of a design, and hte meaning of it is beautiful as well. I cant wait to see it up if/when they finally allow.

i sort of like it being empty how it is now. but i’m sure the new design will look awesome when completed.

don’t care really about the new WTC, its design, location or architect. A fitting tribute for 9/11: a MODEST golden plate at ground zero with the names of the dead.

rab> Diana died in july 96 I think…

sounds about right, thanks Pomme :thumb:

I think a garden would be the best tribute, unfortunately this won’t happen. Not enough money could be made from a garden. A brand new big office block is just exactly what the money men are looking for.

The designer wants to leave a large hole as part of the tribute and in that hole, a garden. Part of the slurry wall that supported the previous buildings foundations would be exposed and a lot of people have spoken out about this. Some think it would detract from the buildings around cause they’d be looking down a big hole. Some want another building (money men). Some think it a fitting tribute. I happen to think it’s a great idea however the designer is already under great pressure to remove it and I’d be impressed if it made it into the final design.

I agree about the dianna thing but I have a feeling it wont be forgoten for some time to come simply because of the way she died much like jfk it is shrouded in mystery.

WW2 memorials all over the world are very simple and mainly consist of plaques and gardens, those are the best form to remember the dead. The memorial tower looks good but is it neccessary? millions died in WW2 so if it is fitting for those heroes I’m sure the same format would create a nice tribute for those who died in the trade towers.

RabBell,

Bringing order to your thread: I would like to comment on your post.

The controversy isn’t much of a controversy. The owner of the land, the guy who gets all the insurance money, picked his own architect to develop the property.

On top of that design, they stuck Libeskinds’ spire from his ‘chosen design’. Some may think that is not cool, but that’s business. The one holding the money gets to make the decisions. This results in functionality and art; or neither could exist happily.

It’s a good business story. Ego management on display with the architects must be interesting.
