'then' or 'than'

OK boys and girls, let’s do a grammar lesson. When writing in English I always have the same problem: when do I have to use ‘then’ or ‘than’?

Someone told me once “An easy tip to remember this is to ask yourself ‘when?’. If this question makes sense with your sentence, you use THEN. See? When - Then.”

Uhuh, very nice. So, seriously, eh?!

U use “than” when comparing things, for example:

This forum is cooler than all other forums on the net.

U use “then” in relationship to time (an order of events), for example:

I did all the tutorials on Kirupa and then I became a flash genius. (cough, cough)

Get the idea? If u want more examples just ask, okie? =)

D :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah, thanks  … the ‘when’ - ‘then’ rule actually makes sense then!

Yup, it does ;).

D :stuck_out_tongue:

Now teach us a bit of your language :beam:

OK  Dutch or French? My Italian is not very fresh anymore…it’s been 10 years, but I’m learning it again now, so it won’t be for now.

Anyway, let’s pick Dutch. First lesson - pay attention!

The Kirupa forum is a fun place!
De Kirupa forum is een leuke plaats!

Soul & Kit, sitting in a tree…
Soul & Kit, zitten in een boom…

:stuck_out_tongue: j/k

What do you want to know? Oh, you meant Romanian? :beam:

Haha very funny :stuck_out_tongue:

Zitten in een boom heheh sounds funny :beam:

laughs so hard!

And the rest of it? :stuck_out_tongue:

It almost sounds like and English person trying to do a German accent but saying English words.

Hang on, did that make any sense? :sure:

Like the Germans in Allo Allo (if anyone else remembers that).

Not at all. :stuck_out_tongue: Dutch sounds like German, it’s just not so…erm… “hard” or “military” if you want.

Alo Alo is awesome, guuud meu’ning.

Oh, I don’t know the rest of the song… if you tell me in English, I’ll translate it.

My uncle’s girlfriend is Dutch… When she talks I can almost understand what she says (I’m pretty good at German) but sometimes it throws me completely.

Goed om te weten. Vanaf nu kan ik dus tegen jou Nederlands spreken, je verstaat het toch door je goede kennis van het Duits… Ik geloof dat er nog iemand is op de forum die Nederlands spreekt of verstaat… hij heeft een koe als avatar.

wonders what he said :-\ Is it about me?

 • Soul :s:

**** man, I’m not that good… :stuck_out_tongue:

?? What did it mean?

 • Soul :s:

Beats the hell out of me.

Something about talking on forums, but we might have to ask for the full translation.

I can imagine that hearing is something very different than reading:stuck_out_tongue:

What I wrote was very basic, blah blah stuff, nothing special. Here’s the translation anyway:

Goed om te weten. Vanaf nu kan ik dus tegen jou Nederlands spreken, je verstaat het toch door je goede kennis van het Duits… Ik geloof dat er nog iemand is op de forum die Nederlands spreekt of verstaat… hij heeft een koe als avatar.

Good to know. From now on I can speak to you in Dutch, since you have a good knowlegde of German… I believe there’s another person on the forum that speaks or understands Dutch… he has a cow in his avatar.

OK, now let’s do French!

No way, I stopped learning French when I was 13!

If you talk in German I should probably understand most of that.

Hm, my German is even worse than my Italian. It’s odd, I know, 'cause Dutch and German are so much alike, but still… Reading and understanding is no problem, but writing…

Allons, allons, ne soit pas timide! Un peu de français ne peut pas te faire de mal!

Er… “Come come, don’t be so shy, a little French won’t hurt you”?
