Well, I decided to give Ubuntu/Linux a shot (using 5.10), and I managed to play mp3 and divx (YAY!) but I’m a complete programming noob/I get easily frustrated and I do have a few questions for those of you who have used Ubuntu:

How the hell do I install blender ? (I unpacked a gazillion packages from the blender site but none of them do anything… do I have to go into a shell window and do things there ?)

Can I override my monitor’s refreshing rate like I can in windows ?

I would gladly use the ‘Synaptic Package Manager’ but it asks for a root password
-
which isn’t my root password!
…are there any other apps I should try / basic documentation I should read to use that OS with more ease ?
