[URGENT] Calling all Brits... or anyone that knows heaps about freight/shipping

I’ve got a bit of a dillemma on my hands here. I’m thinking to buy a hard-disk array from someone in London, but the thing’s 35kg!!!

I’m in Australia, and I need a cheap way to get it from there to here. Cheap, as in, cheaper than 300 pounds (which is the shipping quote the seller’s obtained).

This is kinda urgent… Help?

Hmmm, you can’t send it through regular Royal Mail, it’s too heavy.

You’re gonna have to go with a courier like FexEx, UPS, DHL etc…

They can be quite expensive tho, you can probably find a less mainstream one, probably cheaper.

You’d need to tell us the postcode it’s coming from in the UK, the place it’s going in Australia, the cost of the hard-disk array, and the size of the package to be able to get a quote. Fill us in

Wow thats expensive, we ordered furniture from china once, and i dont think it cost that much, and th efuriture was quite heavy

From London to Perth, Western Australia. 35kg. £150 for the array. And it’s about this big:

This thing’s a precious commodity - really hard to find, so I’d hate to let it fly past, especially for £150.

Any ideas?

We already know it’s coming from London to Perth, we need to know the postcodes. 35kg is even past the maximum weight sending from Australia to London (max is 20kg). This calls for UPS Priority Service…

Ugh… sorry.
Not sure of the London postcode. I’ll contact the seller. The destination postcode is 6026.

sigh I’d seriously only want to spend about AU$200 on shipping. Anything more would be a bit unfortunate.

I’ll have to be honest with you ya3, it looks like a bit more. I went on Austpost’s website and I checked the cost for up to 35KG. It was like $240. Get back to that guy and ask for the postcodes because I was able to check on UPS for you when I didn’t know about that.

AU$240? That could work…

Still waiting on the seller to give me a postcode. It’s very early morning in London right now, so he should reply later tonight.

I think I’ve checked the UPS site. I just put in any random London postcode and it gave me a price over 300 GBP.

I mean, for 300 GBP (almost AU$800), I may as well fly over there myself, say hi to the Queen, sling the disk array under my arm and head back home :stuck_out_tongue:

btw, minimalistik: do you work in postage or something?

Lol, no I don’t but I recently got a SLR film camera from Ebay and I do an annual hosting postage to my hosting company so I’ve used AustPost’s website quite a bit to check costs.

Ah, but… my package wouldn’t be via AusPost. It needs to be a courier based in the UK, right?

You could always hire a guy with a Pilatus PC-12 that wants to visit Australia to carry the disk array with him

Lol. You wouldn’t happen to have a Pilatus PC-12, would you?

Give me 4 million dollars and I will!

Ah, but… my package wouldn’t be via AusPost. It needs to be a courier based in the UK, right?

well, yeah.

Bleh. Someone else snapped up the array today… oh well.

I found a couple of others, but one’s in Egypt and costs over AU$2000 to ship, and the other guy’s asking for 1000 pounds for the unit itself.

I guess I’ll just have to find an alternative to Discreet storage, or wait for one to crop up in Australia. As I said, bleh.

Thanks for the help, guys
