Sometimes after biking for a couple of hours (I mean seriouse biking, 33+ mph constant) I get very light-headed for a long time. Does anyone know any quick fixes? I don’t like laying down because it makes me very tired and I’m afraid of going to sleep in this condition.
I used to get this after cross country practice (wisconsin high school state qualifiers! woot). It was like the best natural buzz.
Anyways, after practice we’d jump into Lake Michigan (practices were at a park on the shore). The water was so cold I’d get rid of it right away. So try taking a cold shower.
taking a cold shower will get rid of it - but changing your body temperature that drastically in that short amount of time is not good for your heart, nervous system, or muscles…
trust me on that - it gets kinda scientific…
any rate a lukewarm shower would be best -
also the symptoms you are describing are ones usually ocurring when the person does not have enough energy going into the event and really has nothing to do with afterwards…
about an hour before you bike - i would suggest drinking like 8-12 oz of orange juice or powerade - followed by intermittent amounts of water - also take water on your bike ride…
and drink - do not allow your mouth to go dry - if your mouth feels dry you are already dehydrated…
watch the water intake though as the more that is in your stomach, the more blood rushes to help digest - which in turn takes blood away from your muscles.
after you are done, i would suggest eating something with sugar in it - perhaps another round of OJ or powerade - fruit sugars work for me as well - this helps keep your muscles fueled up and helps to prevent muscle burning…
it’s all science bro-
and if you are working out past the “get light headed point” you are only hurting yourself.
yeh it sounds like either a lack of sugar or salt…
pr is right… but remember short term glucose busrts are no replacement for proper carbs. it sounds like your blood sugar is dropping too low, often an apple is better than a sugary snack as it prevents ure blood sugar from yo-yo ing
yeah - dont eat like a candy bar or anything - i should have cleared that up - i usually eat a fruit smoothie and then eat a good wholesome meal within the next 2 hours.
I get dizzy spells often (medical condition that I should take seriously but dont).
This is the best way to avoid: Eat
Serious.
If you just eat a good meal before hand it saves a lot of problems. When I say a good meal, I mean a combination of things. Salt is good, it helps with cramping mainly. Starch, as it fills your tummy with energy. Iron is good as well, whether meat or nuts, your choice. And vitamins, either in fruit or veg.
If you dont want a full blown meal, as it is the afternoon or something, try chips (with salt) fruit, biltong (jerky for USA people)(if you dont live in USA or South Africa, whatever the term is used for dried meat).
And when I say before hand, I dont mean right before hand, as eating and then doing exercise straight after is bad! Aways wait an hour or two.
And if you feel a dizzy spell coming on, STOP! dont wait for it to get worse! I always make this mistake , and end up fainting in the worse places and situations.
Stick your head between your legs and breath.
