I don’t know exactly what does portfolio mean?

A portfolio is a showcase of your work.
It can be artwork, or website design or anything.

a portfolio is used to attract clients, once they see your work and what you are able to create, they might consider hireing you, Take my site for example, i have a portfolio that displays everything that i have made.
