Everyone says that the Mac G5 is good for video editing and such. I dont see it. Could someone clearify this for me. Because I think I can do the same thing with windows.
Usually when you own a G5 you have a crapload of RAM; thus it is very useful for video editing…
And maybe because Macs don’t crash as often.
Well first the G5’s are some freakin fast machines, i think though it really has to do with the software they provide and the ports available from an off the shelf computer. they are basically all ready for things like FireWire, so you can plug in dv cams and import your film pretty quickly into apps like Final Cut Pro which is one of the best video editing tools out there.
Its the bundle pack that works well together, alot of people use Macs but yes it still can be done with a PC with the right components (video card, program, quick specs on computer)
In the end its up to the user.
BUS speed. 800mhz FSB, and Serial ATA, into a 64 bit CPU. That translates into a fat pipe for data through-put. I love my PC, but the G5 we have at work just screams. The only downside is you need to take out a morgage on your house to get one that’s really nice.
same old mac vs pc argument, though i dont personly own a mac
the only downside is you need to take out a mortage on your house to get one that’s really nice
i would if i could afford to (not take out a mortage, buy a mac – i dont have a house!)
use what the hell you feel most comfortable with! but 64 bit CPU !??! [all the above] and have you seen inside a G5 ?
All of the reasons above, plus:
Macs have awesome software along with hardware. Final Cut Pro is awesome. Garage band (haven’t tried) should be amazing.
Apple has always been bleeding edge, and most designers like that. They look so **** sexy, and they have the stuff to back it up. The only possible downside I see in Mac OS X is not being able to run Windows apps, but theres a program called “Virtual PC” for the Mac that makes running windows apps possible.

Woah, that’s news to me :sure:.

In my experience, they don’t crash as often. I had my iMac for over a year and it never crashed and it froze only once and I believe that was because I dropped something on it. I have many friends who have similar experiences. Anyway - quit trying to start a useless flame war!
Anyway, I find video editing in a Mac to be a pleasure. For beginners, iMovie is great. The interface is easy to get used to and it’s well-integrated with the other iLife applications making it easy to add music and burn your masterpiece on a DVD. For the more advanced users, Final Cut Express gives you more control. And finally for you super geniuses, there’s Final Cut Pro.
I think the seamless integration of hardware makes the Mac a good machine to use for video editing.
The biggest reason is:
ADVERTISING!!
…and well, cant argue with the firewire that is good…
Other than that, I’ve been working on Macs for the last year and well… I can’t wait to switch to PC’s. If your using any OS other than 10 , your screwd. I lost count by the end of the first month how many times the Macs crashed. OS 10 is waaayy overdue.
Our 3d and digital media graphic department used to run all on mac, then they realise they can achieve same and better results by swithching to PC’s, and they did… and everyone is more than happy.
Russianbeer, I highly doubt that you’ll find a G5 with anything less than OSX, and plust, OS9 was just as stable, if not more than windows 98/windows 95, the comparable windows of the day.
Anyway, all of the above reasons, plus its just so **** pretty
OS 9 stable?
I was in a whole office of em, and at least one would crash daily.
OS memory was not protected, messed things up.
I’m not saying stable in today’s terms, but compared to the other OSes from the time…
Windows 98 isn’t stable either. What’s the point? Your office needs to upgrade to OSX. How are you not there yet?
But then again, I don’t know why some people are still using Windows 98 when the more stable 2k is out there. Feh.
We’re all switching to PCcs, following our Graphic Dep. And saving tons of money too, so we’re getting some extra cool toys.
I admit it, OS 9 stunk. But you obviously haven’t tried OS X.
¿¿ “OS 10 is waaaayy over due” ??
…man, where you been ?!
OSX is on it’s 3rd major release and the entire X group is at least 2 years old now
I’ve used mac 7.x, 8.x, & 9.x and all were crap compared to X, but Ren is right - that era’s windows were no jewels either
maybe the shops that have significant prob’s with macs just don’t know what they’re doing (with them) because it just can’t be denied (honestly) that the entire graphics / video / design / effects arena is certainly Mac~heavy … so many pros can’t be all that wrong
just some fyi, i was running PS, FW, and FMX on my schools PC (beefed up with like 2.4ghz and a crap load of ram) and it has crashed on me so many times, thank God i save a lot…
Anyway, FINAL CUT PRO…thats all i gotta say

Your point? You can get all of those on PCs as well…(infact some Athlon 64s have 1600mhz FSB)
I don’t think either is better. Its all down to personal preference.

Right, no doubt, but do you not think that if you were runing Windows 98 that every pc would crash at least once a day ??

I think you dont know the diffrence of a application crash and a OS crash huh?
