For those of you who do not know, Slavery is thriving. Yes, SLAVERY. :jail: :jail:
According to www.iAbolish.com
Though the legal argument against slavery has been won, slavery persists and even thrives in some parts of the world. By a conservative estimate, 27 million people are enslaved today worldwide – more than at any time in history.
I first came across this website during my ENGL 102 college course, I had no idea that slavery was still around. I had always known about servitude - people working for little to no pay for extremely long hours, and in very harsh conditions, (Nike is one of the largest companies to do this). But I had no idea about the seriousness of this worldwide problem. Simply by educating people about the issue will help 27+ million slaves by banning or boycotting those products made by the slaves. Causing the owners to lose.
Yeah, there are also cases of forced labor in diamond camps in Africa also - most human evils never really go away. They just reappear in less visible places

I urge everyone to sell all of their diamonds, and boycott buying them in the future. They are not rare (rubies are by far more rare) mined by the blood of the workers, and no pay.
DeBeers is the largest monopoly in the world. No wonder they can’t operate legally in the USA…
There is a nice flash animation that highlights some of the cruel tactics used by companies such as deBeers. I found it via a link somebody here posted. But yeah - it’s quite bad what the diamond companies do.

Yes wise, but does that mean we give up?
And let slavery be rampant and do nothing of it, scince it will reapear again anyway?
No of course not. I look at it as a governance issue in those countries that allow corporations to enslave their people. For those countries, they find nothing wrong with slavery, just like most of the US in the early 1800’s. Slavery is the norm to them, and the chances of them giving that up are very slim.
Even if we do boycott their products (and we do sometimes), there are other countries that are willing to fill the void the US/Europe leaves behind. Reforming the labor laws would be a way out of slavery, but it is not a practical way because the governments of those countries, in a large part, encourage slavery indirectly through dictatorships, voting restrictions, etc.
Not to mention, most of these countries’ leading officials can be ‘bought’, (not that it doesnt happen in other countires). But it is just their way of life and they are customed to it.
Possibly by educating the people in these countries will allow them to stand up and speak out for themselves. However, I know this is much easier said than done.
Located on the iabolish.com website, they state that they have bought out many slaves from africa and all across the world.
If you ‘Buy’ out a slave, think about it, the slave owners are still making money off of the slave. So the main concern is to educate the people’s of these countries to let them know this is wrong and freedom is there you just have to organize and speak out as one voice.
Yeah, I agree. Education is the key to solving almost all of the world’s problems. While I am not implying that educated people do not become criminals, the chances are less than that of someone uneducated with no real chance of a life beyond crime and profiteering from the misfortunes of others.
I would bet that companies such as Nike, deBeers, etc. make profits greater than the total GDP of the entire nation they are doing their cheap labor in.
Just as with anything, the more people you have supporting an idea the easier it is to make an impact or educate others.
This is the issue I want to stress, ‘You’ wouldnt believe how many people don’t know about the issue of slavery. By simply educating people and making them more aware of the slave’s goods it will help the cause in the end.
Although, in today’s society slavery exists in many forms.
We just have to be educated enough to notice the forms.
