3d max robot/mech in progress (V2)

I got off the beaten track whilst testing out some material mapping methods (and creating a few of my own materials in photoshop). This was the result. It’s not a robot, but perhaps I’ll include some of this in a scene as a backdrop.

Nice dude, thats not even hdr, you could have the robot breaking the wall, coming straight to the camera. yelling like the hulk! hehe :smirk:

Or have like a robot fight, and have your character hit that scenery, making cracks in the wall. :beam:

That’s a pretty cool idea. This last week I’ve been flitting from project to project… I need something to focus on… sigh!

here’s the latest render on the leg. Not much work done, actually I removed some of the dodgy leg parts… I’m struggling to fit this in as a part of some ideas I sketched out a few days ago. I always seem to be short on time!

You are really good at this stuff Ironikart. Have you had a look at the 3d contests they have at 3dluvr? They have some pretty cool prizes and this contest’s theme may just be perfect for you - cyborgs (unfortunately non-military). Anyways I’m no where near being that good to enter a contest (I am still working on a human character - it took me a week to model the body and a week for the head and have not even gotten close to texturing yet). Actually - I would like to post them and get some input but haven’t got them here (I’m at work). I’ll post them in a couple days from home when I finish with my house being repainted (I haven’t had a computer or internet at home in a week - sniff sniff and boo hoo hoo).

D

i liked the blue better. but this update is looking really good.

I re-sketched some ideas quickly last night and I’ve finally got the style I was looking for. I’m going to restart the modelling and hopefully it’ll look a little like this drawing (only a quick sketch BTW).

You are crazy… it looks so cool, i really like your style

quick body test render…

got a question for you ironikart, do you model with one mesh or makeit up or different modelled parts?

yeah i wanted to know the same…lol.

different parts. It looks the same rendered, takes more space in the file size… but its quicker. If I was inclined I could attach them together and clean up excess mesh, but then it becomes harder to make any changes later on. Most of the parts are just modified primitives. If I have some complex modelling to do I usually poly model from a plane primitive and make the mesh edge by edge.:beam: (for more organic looking stuff)

I’m really enjoying this robot so far. Hopefully I should have it finished late next week.

ah k, so thats why you are having texturning problem.

yeah, I find max 3’s UVW unwrapping hell to use, especially if the mesh is complex. I’ve tried my old version of Painter 3D but it doesn’t support max 3 (only 1 and 2… that’s how old my version is!).

I understand that in later versions you can use a mesh Unwrap to make UV mapping easier, but I’ve yet to find that function in r3. Are you a Max user Soulty? I saw a post from you earlier and you seem to know the ins and outs of Maya pretty well…

Well I have tried every 3d program some time, Max, XSi, Houdini,Maya cinema.

But i rather use maya, just like the way it works and the feel around the app.

Houdini! Pretty rare to find someone who’s had experience with houdini. Every other 3D artist I’ve had contact with may have touched it at one time, but I’ve heard it’s pretty complex to get a good grasp of. I’ve never used it my self, but I’ve read positive things about it as a professional app.

Do you have a gallery of work anywhere soulty?

can’t say i have experience with houdini, just checked it out. Pretty complex app, its very heirachy based, like every step you do can be in the heirachy, so you can go back and change something like a bevel which will effect the out come of everything after it, much like the stacking capabilities of max. though the very cool thing is that you can go back into the history and make a copy of that node (its all about nodes in there) and then make another heirachy based onthat copy of that node without touching your original model, and you can also after combine the nodes. Too much, watched some vids at 3d buzz , amazing stuff. Too complex for me, so i still with maya.

:: Working through my website right now, The one i have up now, is uncomplete in the 3d section, well the whole portfolio section was thown up. so soon as i get this finished, ill be putting up some 3d work. and i can get back to working on some 3d, sites taking up all my time. :smirk:

Your site rocks
Very slick, nice transitions, I’m envious. I’m going to have to complete some more artwork before I get my site up and going. Basically I have 2 styles of 3d artwork now… before Brazil and after! having a decent renderer has inspired me to continue producing some 3D art… I think I hit a wall with how good a render can look just using Max’s default scanline. I look forward to seeing your work when you get it up on your site.
