Acheeving this color/texture in PS CS

Hey guys I use Photoshop CS and I loved how the robots looked in eye robot. All I am trying to do is recreate that white texture sort of see through look the robots had. I have like a horizontal bar I want to apply it to. Its sory of a white plasticky look to it and sort of see through. Has anyone got some skills on doing that? Thanks for you help.

see the irobotmovie.com for a look at the robot plastic look.

i kind of have a plastic thing going on on the edges

make a white box, duplicate the layer and invert the new layer so that the box is black. put the black box behind the white box
gaussian blur the black box at like 7-10 pixels, this will be your drop shadow
ctrl-click the white layer so that the box is selected, now, select the black layer in the layer palette and hit delete. this should leave a hollow drop shadow.
now set the layer opacity of the white layer to around 10-20%, should look something like this.

This effect works best with a complex background, or a background that isnt a solid colour… you want elements behind the plastic so that it looks like plastic.

of course, you will have to fiddle with a white-to-transparent white gradient to get that beveled effect, but its not hard

Works nicely, the effect looks like laminate. I would suggest a slightly less transparent version for the iRobot white.

Hmmm if your’e lookin for a laminate look, I’ve provided a source file a while back:http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=205963

You can also take that same look and increase the white opactiy of the transparent plastic, and apply some satin to it or somethin, of that nature.

not really useful but i found cool nonetheless, a glass block…

made using the same techniques but with a few twists which i can’t reveal…i’m just too lazy right now to type them out

[ot]Woowt- I got jamie hosting and a domain so i get to see his hot work- im excited[/ot]

^^Its true, darkmotion definately hooked me up with hosting and the domain name

now present more kick-*** work :P!!

Thnka you guys so much. fasterthanlight thanks for the break down. And Simplistik thanks for the source. However I guess I might have to turn to a 3d app to get the fx I am looking for. The plastic look is cool, but it looks like on the Ns 5 robot it has some sort of texture to make the platic look as if it is a hard plastic surface… Not sure if I am explaining it right. I wil play with what you guys have provided. Thanks a mil
